The Appeal
What a revelation the original Austin Seven must have been on its launch in 1923. At £149 in 1925, the four-seat AC Tourer, affectionately known as the ‘Chummy’, was still equivalent to a year’s wages, but it finally offered the tantalising opportunity for many to switch out of a motorbike and sidecar into a proper car.
Nicknamed the car that ‘put Great Britain on wheels,’ the Chummy was also rather good, its ‘Mighty Atom’ 4cyl sidevalve engine proving reliable and the mechanics ideal for home maintenance. This rather lovely 1925 car is one of around 40,000 built over the seven year production run and presents in very good, unmodified condition.
The extensive history file includes the original buff log book and records of a Jersey-based restoration in 1983. Soon after, it was awarded the Brighton Trophy. Further work was undertaken in the Noughties covering the axle and brakes, and in 2015 the carburettors and electrics were attended to. The car now sits on UK plates and is an extremely tidy and very pretty example in an attractive colour scheme. It looks perfect for lazy weekend drives or perhaps even some vintage touring events.
