The Appeal
The ‘Twenty’ was not quite inexpensive, but this smaller model was designed to be more accessible and aimed directly at the emerging breed of pre-war ‘owner drivers.’ Available between 1922 and 1929, it was a huge success with nearly 3,000 produced.
This caris one of the batch of 41 ‘GWL’ prefix cars during the summer of 1928, before being despatched to Park Ward in June to receive its limousine body. Originally Primrose and Black, the current blue and black colour scheme is the result of a remarkable 30 year rolling restoration by a previous keeper between 1963 and the 1990s. We know from the car’s exceptionally detailed history file that on completion it undertook a series of UK and continental tours, averaging 4,000 miles per year during the 90s and 00s.
The vendor acquired the car in 2021 and has treated it to a considerably more relaxed life. It has been dry stored and used very sparingly. Recent work has included renovations by specialist Fiennes Restoration Workshop, including a long list of new parts shown in the photos, and overhaul of the carburettors in July 2024.
As it approaches its 100 birthday, here is a chance to acquire a very usable pre-war Rolls with the sort of history file that will occupy many fireside evenings.
