The Appeal
The Modsport class has long been a playground for creative engineering, and the Healey Sprite / MG Midget platform, lightweight, simple, and endlessly tuneable, is one of the most popular bases for competition builds. This example takes the concept to its logical extreme: a ground-up construction spanning two decades, purpose-built for hillclimbs and sprints.
At its heart sits a fully rebuilt 1,340cc A-Series engine fed by twin 45 DCOE Weber carburettors, custom-jetted to suit the setup. Crucially, the engine has been set back 14 inches within the chassis, creating near-mid-engine weight distribution and, the vendor states, ultimate handling balance. Power is delivered through a Type-9 five-speed manual gearbox, whilst Wilwood four-pot front callipers and a dual-circuit braking system handle the stopping. The chassis features independent front suspension with a top-mounted anti-roll bar and a Ford Escort rear axle with a widened rear track, complemented by lightweight fibreglass body tubs.
The car comes with dual identity paperwork: an Irish Racing Logbook and an Irish Road Logbook, offering versatility for both competition and road use. The vendor describes it as well-balanced and fully sorted, with essentially zero-mile mechanicals. For anyone seeking a ready-to-go Modsport machine with strong engineering credentials, this car makes total sense.DSC_3510 Liam Ruth.jpg84.84 KB
