1964 Bedford J2 Motorhome

Highlights

  • Well-documented history from new, originally delivered to Richmond of Epsom in November 1964
  • Recognised example among UK transport enthusiasts, registered as 538NHO
  • Comprehensive motorhome conversion including log burner and hot shower
  • Off-grid capability with dual solar panels and dual leisure batteries

The Appeal

The Bedford coach was a familiar sight on British roads throughout the 1960s and 1970s, serving operators large and small across the country with attractive lines and rugged build quality at its heart. They racked up remarkable mileage, and became almost synonymous with this period of public leisure and transport.

This 1964 example, affectionately known as "Molly," was delivered new to Richmond of Epsom (trading as Epsom Coaches) in November 1964, before later serving with Wiltshire County Council as Fleet No. 21 until withdrawal in December 1979.
Given a new lease of life through a comprehensive motorhome conversion, Molly now offers year-round usability. The conversion encompasses a full kitchen with cooker, sink, and hot water, a shower, a WC, and a double bedroom fitted with a Tempur mattress. A log burner provides warmth during colder months, while two large solar panels and two leisure batteries allow for off-grid independence.

The vendor tells us that many memorable trips have been enjoyed in Molly across both summer and winter, and that she draws smiles wherever she goes. The sale is described as reluctant, prompted only by the current owner's plans to tour Europe in something smaller.
