The Appeal
If you’re more used to quick Escorts like the RS2000 and Mexico, here’s something much rarer and arguably just as interesting. It is a remarkable Escort Elba, built in tiny numbers by Dormobile in the late 60s and early 70s and now surviving in single digits.
Ford sold the Elba through its main dealers, and it's a triumph of ingenuity over space. As the photos show, it features a drop tailgate, pop-top and camper interior with full bed and a kitchen. This 1970 1,300cc car is highly original, the interior retaining the clever Dormobile layout and Ford fittings like the black vinyl seats and three-spoke wheel. Inside and out, it is in good order, with red paintwork following a 2005 restoration. The RS alloys are an amusing nod to those fast Fords, as is the rear window sticker.
There are a few points to note about the bodywork in photos, but a lengthy voluntary MOT with no structural advisories adds confidence for buyers. This great car is ultra rare and perfect for classic camping or drawing crowds at Ford shows.
