The Appeal
The advent of helicopters meant the British Armed Forces needed an air-portable vehicle. Land Rover gave them this: the Lightweight. Even simpler and more pared back than the usual Series models, if one can imagine such a thing, the Lightweight proved well-suited to the Army's needs, and many have gone on to be cherished in civilian life. That includes this 1978 Series III example, which continues to present well nearly 50 years on. This particular example was in military service from Feb 1979 until Sept 1993. Initially with 3rd Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers until 1990 then with Defence Storage & Distribution Agency (DSDA) Bramley Site.
Presented in military-style drab green and fitted with a canvas tilt, this Land Rover would be perfect for exploring Britain's more rural areas. It exhibits a gentle patina of age, so you won't worry about picking up the odd scratch or two, and there are a handful of sensible alterations, including the fitment of a roll cage and uprated seats.
For those seeking a supremely usable classic Land Rover, this Series III Lightweight has a lot going for it. image.png1.33 MB
