The Appeal

For those of a certain age huddled around TV sets on Saturday evenings throughout the mid 80s, the star of Knight Rider wasn’t the show’s bouffanted, hair-chested former lifeguard; it was the Knight Industries Two Thousand, better known as KITT and more familiar as a heavily modified 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.

The KITT Firebird is one of the greatest TV cars of all time. But you don’t need us to tell you that - just look at the photos of this highly detailed replica to see why. Menacing in black, the car was cleverly modified with an extended nose cone, blacked-out rear lights, custom wheels and lowered suspension. Inside, things were considerably more colourful thanks to the big, curving bespoke dashboard with its array of fancy digital readouts, all controlled by a sentient computer programme capable of thinking, learning and feeling emotion. This remarkable car could easily have cut corners on the road to KITT evocation. It hasn’t. Every KITT feature we’ve listed above is present and correct. Deeper details like the PMD high black Sandstone seats, overhead console and gullwing wheel are also fitted. The condition is very impressive - this is the sort of car that will drag attention at shows.

The car arrived in the UK in early 2022, and the vendor bought it in September 2023. In place of the original 305CI 5L V8, it now has a 350CI 5.7L V8, fully rebuilt three years ago, and it presents very well in the photos with a chromed finish on various components. Since the current keeper purchased it, we’re told it has been serviced every six months at Backtrack Builds and will be sold with a new service. The car has also received a suspension overhaul including Koni adjustable shocks, along with new brakes, brake lines, exhaust, and cooling system parts. It has been stored carefully in a Carcoon with air circulation.

The vendor describes the overall condition as very good, noting only minor paintwork swirls and slight glass scuffs. With 71,000 miles recorded, this is presented as a well-sorted cruiser, backed by an extensive history file. A great opportunity for fans of one of TV’s best cars.
