The Appeal
There are Mk1 Golfs, and then there are the 1,000 final-edition cars built in August and September 1983 exclusively for UK customers. Most easily identifiable by their ‘P Slot’ Pirelli alloys but also fitted with green glass, sunroof, two headlamp grille, MFA trip computer and leather wheel, these ‘Campaign’ cars are the ultimate version of VW’s game-changing hatchback.
To fuel enthusiast demand, most Campaigns have or are undergoing serious investment, and this fantastic Mars Red car is no exception. The current keeper bought it as a part-finished project and has since undertaken an extensive renovation using genuine VAG parts, by what the vendor describes as an ‘old school mechanic.’ Work has covered trim, suspension and brakes, and the quality is evident from the photos. The approach was to retain original features where possible, including paint and interior. It has been waxoyled for protection.
We’re told the car retains its original engine and gearbox and runs very well. The seller’s confidence in the car shows in its fresh voluntary MOT. A great example of a superb drivers’ car and one that would likely attract attention, even at a Mk1 show.
