The appeal
Just as Mazda would do a few years later with the MX-5, Toyota took the best of what European sports cars had to offer and pushed it to a higher level. The benchmark at the time was the brilliant but fragile Fiat X1/9. The MR2, short for “Midship Runabout”, shared its concept but benefited from clever engineering and careful construction. It was, and still is today, one of the defining sports cars of the 1980s.
This 1987 example, very close to original, was first registered in Germany. It is now registered in France and holds a French classic registration document (carte grise de collection). The dealer fitted several sought-after upgrades, including Koni dampers, Borbet wheels and a Toyota Europe exhaust.
Since the seller acquired it in 2023, the car has undergone a mechanical refurbishment including a timing belt replacement, work on the braking system and renewal of various fluids. A detailed list of work is shown below.
Now registered in France with a classic registration document and a contrôle technique reported as clear, valid until 2031, this MR2 AW11 looks ready to hit the road.
The seller states
“This is a very good, original-condition car that drives very well, with period equipment fitted by the dealer in 1987: 15-inch Borbet alloy wheels, Toyota Europe exhaust and a Momo steering wheel, which I supply in addition to the original wheel.
The car is in excellent condition. The engine pulls cleanly right up to the rev limit, the brakes are effective and the handling is very good. The gears change smoothly.”IMG_20261014_185208 Amzi dashmir.jpg4.73 MB
