The Appeal
The E39 5 Series is a high point in BMW's history – balancing sporting dynamics with refinement while introducing a host of new technological features. The 528i, powered by BMW's silky 2.8-litre inline-six, offered a blend of performance and smoothness, and the SE specification added a generous level of standard equipment. Well-maintained examples of this well-regarded model are becoming harder to find.
This particular Oxford Green 528i SE has benefited from considerable care and investment under its current enthusiast owner, who purchased the car in September 2023 and has kept it garaged since. The bodywork is described by the vendor as “genuinely rust-free”, with Bilt Hamber rustproofing spray applied to the underside. The paintwork presents well, with only minor age-related marks noted and a minor dent above the windscreen.
Mechanically, the car has been comprehensively renewed, including new brake pads and discs all round, new braided brake hoses, new front shock absorbers, many new front and rear suspension components, new power steering hoses and reservoir with new fluid, new battery and four new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. An oil and spark plug service was completed less than 1000 miles ago, with the seller reporting four green lights remaining on the dash.
Inside the otherwise original and well-equipped interior, the seller has installed a new Dynavin infotainment system, which has been made to look like the original system and comes with DAB, Bluetooth, navigation, Apple CarPlay and reversing camera. The car is also provided with the original radio and cassette player. The car features a heated steering wheel – a highly unusual feature for the E39 5 Series.
The seller says, “This car drives beautifully and could be used as a daily driver if you so wished, or as a special weekend car”. That will be a privileged decision to be taken by the next person who is fortunate enough to own this outstanding example of one of BMW’s finest models.
