The Appeal
The Volvo 850 represented a transformative moment for the Swedish brand, introducing a host of features that were completely new for its larger models, including front-wheel drive, five-cylinder engines and unique 'Delta Link' rear axle, as well as advanced safety features such as a side impact protection system and self-adjusting front seats. The 850 also introduced high-performance variants, culminating in the turbocharged 2.3-litre R, and went racing in touring cars, cementing its performance reputation.
This 1996 850 R is a highly specified automatic sedan – one of the rarest variants, with only around 50 shown to be licensed in the UK, and its growing collectability recognised by its addition to Hagerty's UK Price Guide in 2022. The car was supplied new in Japan and imported in early 2026. It presents extremely well, including underneath, has recently received a recent full service, and comes with an extensive list of new parts. Its MOT recorded no advisories.
The car features a high specification, including Alcantara and leather upholstery, electrically adjustable and heated seats, cruise control and 200W premium audio system. It comes with its original floor mats. The seller states that the car has recently received a full service, including oil change, new oil, air and fuel filters, five new NGK spark plugs, four new ABS wheel-speed sensors and a new EBD pressure sensor.
The car is supplied with a full HPI certificate, and the seller reports that it drives very well. This is a rare, well-maintained and highly specified example of Volvo's 1990s performance icon, ready to be enjoyed or added to a collection.
