The Appeal

With its clever Vario roof that could switch it from coupe to convertible at the touch of a button, the R170 SLK was a sophisticated and very Mercedes response to the two-seat roadster boom of the 1990s. The SLK230 is arguably the pick of a wide range of engine options because its supercharged 2.3L 4-cylinder engine delivers 190bhp. Add in this car’s extremely rare 5-speed manual gearbox, and you have a car that is as much a sports car as a long-legged mini-grand tourer.
