The R53-generation Mini Cooper S remains one of the most celebrated hot hatches of the early 2000s. Modernising the basic formula of the Issigonis Mini was always going to be risky, but BMW's new iteration has developed an identity of its own. Its supercharged 1.6-litre engine delivers a characterful whine under load, and the lightweight chassis provides the go-kart-like agility that you'd expect of the little hot-hatch.
