The MGB GT, designed by Pininfarina and introduced in October 1965, stands as one of the earliest sports hatchbacks to enter true volume production. Combining elegant fastback styling with practical versatility, the GT offered improved aerodynamics and a top speed exceeding 100mph, alongside a cleverly designed rear deck that provides generous luggage space and a refined 2+2 layout. It remains one of the most usable and enduring classics of its era, blending sporting character with grand touring comfort.
Finished in the iconic and highly desirable Blaze Orange, this 1972 example represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a beautifully restored and exceptionally well-developed MGB GT. Fully restored in 2010 and still presenting in remarkable condition throughout, the car has clearly benefited from both meticulous workmanship and continued, knowledgeable ownership. With receipts exceeding £20, 000 for parts alone and recent expenditure of over £5, 000 through the MG Owners Club to further enhance its touring capability, this is a car that has been consistently improved rather than simply maintained.
At Milestone Classics, we pride ourselves on selecting only the very best MGB GTs, and having previously sold this particular example, we were delighted to be entrusted with its sale once more. Its history is as compelling as its condition. The car was originally supplied new by Wadham Stringer Ltd of Guildford to Ray May, a local enthusiast with a passion for performance machinery, who notably competed with Allard cars. Rather than returning the car to the supplying dealer, he chose to have it maintained by Bob Lee, a highly respected MG specialist based in West Sussex with over five decades of experience. Bob’s intimate knowledge of the marque ensured the car was cared for to an exceptional standard from the very beginning.
Years later, in a wonderful twist of fate, Bob’s daughter rediscovered the car in 2000 on a driveway near her home, and it was promptly brought back into the family. Under Bob Lee’s ownership, the car was treated to a comprehensive and carefully considered programme of upgrades and restoration work, transforming it into a truly outstanding driving machine while preserving its classic character. Mechanically, the car benefits from a significantly uprated 1950cc Stage 2 engine featuring a gas-flowed cylinder head, Piper camshaft, balanced crankshaft, and lightened flywheel. Supporting upgrades include an uprated oil pump, vernier timing gears with duplex chain, and gas-flowed inlet and free-flow stainless exhaust manifold, all contributing to a responsive and engaging driving experience. The gearbox has also been overhauled, ensuring smooth and reliable performance.
The suspension and braking systems have been extensively enhanced to match the increased performance. A full front suspension rebuild incorporates negative camber wishbones, uprated shocks, new kingpins, and polybushes, complemented by a thicker anti-roll bar. The braking system features MGB V8 cross-drilled discs paired with Rover SD1 callipers, along with copper brake pipes and Goodridge hoses for improved feel and durability. The rear suspension has also been rebuilt with anti-roll and anti-tramp bars, Koni shock absorbers, and further refinements to ensure confident handling and ride quality.
Additional upgrades include electronic ignition, a Facet fuel pump, re-cored radiator, replacement heater matrix, and a Kenlowe fan, enhancing reliability and usability in modern driving conditions. Twin 12V batteries, LED backlighting to instruments and headlamps, and thoughtful detailing such as front wheel arch liners further demonstrate the depth of care invested in this car. Sitting on 15-inch Minilite-style wheels with 185/ 65 tyres, the stance is both purposeful and period correct.
The bodywork restoration was carried out to an exceptional standard, with the shell stripped to a bare structure, shot blasted, and rebuilt with attention to every detail. Any corrosion was addressed properly, with replacement of inner and outer sills, castle sections, lower rear wings, and front wings. The result is a structurally sound and visually striking example, finished beautifully in Blaze Orange with gleaming chrome accents that perfectly complement its classic lines.
Inside, the car features a complete leather interior, along with new carpets, headlining, and trim, creating a cabin that feels both authentic and refined. A Webasto sunroof adds an extra touch of open-air enjoyment, perfectly suited to long continental journeys.
Having recently benefitted from further enhancements, including 4-pot performance brake calipers, this MGB GT is not simply a showpiece but a car built to be driven and enjoyed. It offers a rare combination of history, craftsmanship, and usability, making it an ideal companion for both spirited drives and extended touring.
