The Ford Cortina Mk1 “Airflow” was launched just ahead of the 1962 London Motor Show as Ford of Britain’s answer to the growing demand for a modern, practical family saloon. Developed under the project name “Archbishop”, the Cortina was designed to compete directly with the Morris Oxford, Austin Cambridge, Vauxhall Victor and Hillman Minx, combining sharp contemporary styling with dependable engineering and impressive value. Available in a range of body styles with 1200cc and 1500cc overhead-valve engines, the Cortina quickly became one of Britain’s best-loved family cars. Today, rust-free and correctly restored Mk1 examples are increasingly difficult to find, with exceptional cars commanding growing admiration amongst collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Milestone Classics are delighted to offer this exceptional and prize-winning Mk1 Cortina Deluxe, a car that perfectly captures the spirit of the early Ford scene while benefiting from careful sympathetic upgrades and outstanding presentation throughout. We originally sold this car almost five years ago to a former Ford employee who arrived intending to purchase a Milestones upgraded Austin A35, only to be completely won over by the quality and presence of this remarkable Cortina. Since then, the car has been cherished, pampered and maintained regardless of cost.
Purchased in March 1993, the Cortina was treated to an extensive five-year restoration with expenditure exceeding £7, 000, a significant investment at the time. The body was stripped to bare metal before being refinished in its original Ermine White coachwork, beautifully complemented by a subtle red side stripe that perfectly suits the period character of the car. Under the bonnet sits a reconditioned 1500GT specification engine, while the gearbox, axles and braking system were uprated to GT specification to create a Cortina that drives every bit as well as it looks.
Adding further period charm is an aftermarket gear selection system, believed to be by Wooler or Speedograph, complete with a short gear lever and bespoke centre console, giving the cabin a distinctly competition-inspired feel. The original Ravena Red seats have been retained, while new carpets, seals, headlining and sun visors ensure the interior presents to an exceptionally high standard throughout. Exterior enhancements include new front quarter bumpers, rear bumper, hubcaps, spotlights and a beautifully fabricated custom stainless steel exhaust system.
This outstanding Mk1 earned national recognition when it won “Best Mk1 Cortina Deluxe” at the Mk1 Cortina Owners Club National event in 2007, a testament to both the quality of the restoration and the care with which the car has been maintained ever since. During periods of light use and careful storage, the car has always remained enthusiast owned and meticulously looked after.
Since 2018 the Cortina has benefitted from further expenditure including the fitment of a desirable set of Dunlop alloy wheels, together with a rebuilt carburettor, replacement water pump, starter motor and battery. Most significantly, over £4, 000 was invested in comprehensive bodywork improvements including front wings, rear wheel arches, lower rear corners and sills, with all corrosion professionally removed to an exceptionally high standard. The previous owner was a perfectionist who had no intention of selling the car, and the quality of workmanship throughout reflects this dedication.
Today, this Mk1 Cortina stands as one of the sharpest, most usable and best driving examples we have encountered in recent years. It offers the ideal combination of show-winning presentation and genuine road-going enjoyment, equally at home on the concours field or touring the open road.
Accompanying the vehicle is an impressive history file containing restoration summaries, invoices, old V5 documents, photographs from shows and events, contemporary sales brochures, driver’s handbook and supporting paperwork.
