A delightful 1930 MG M Type, one of the most important and influential early MG models ever produced.
Launched at the 1928 Motor Show, the MG M Type Midget was an instant success and is now widely regarded as one of the most important early MG models ever produced. Based on the contemporary Morris Minor, but fitted with the lively 847cc overhead camshaft engine developing around 20 bhp, the lightweight M Type offered spirited performance and was capable of approximately 65 mph - highly impressive for such a small sports car in period.
Competition success quickly followed, with the M Type proving highly effective both in trials and on the track, including class victories in the famous 1930 Brooklands ‘Double Twelve’. Early cars featured fabric-covered coachwork before steel-panelled bodies were introduced from 1931 onwards. Production continued until 1932 when the model was succeeded by the J Type.
The importance of the M Type within MG history cannot be overstated. It laid the foundations for the hugely successful and much-loved MG Midget line, a name that remarkably remained in production until 1979 shortly before the closure of the MG factory at Abingdon.
This particular example has been in the present ownership since 2004 and has clearly been enjoyed exactly as these cars were intended. Used regularly in rallies, trials and touring events, it has proven itself a dependable and characterful companion over many years of enthusiast ownership.
Restored some years ago, the car is fitted with a Morris Minor engine and cooling fan, as many M Types are, and has successfully completed longer journeys including trips from Devon to the Lake District and Wales. It is a practical and well-sorted example that appears ideal for continued use and enjoyment.
Lightweight, engaging and full of charm, these early MGs remain enormous fun to drive and wonderfully rewarding to own, with excellent club support and eligibility for a wide variety of events and touring opportunities.
