Description
Development of the W140 began in 1981, with production scheduled to begin in October 1989. Several designs were analyzed from 1982 to 1986, until the final design by Olivier Boulay was approved on December 9, 1986. The final production body design was approved in 1987. Before production began, the W140's exterior design was altered, with all W140 models featuring a recessed radiator grille instead of the planned, exclusive grille on the top-of-the-line model. This feature was later extended to the entire Mercedes-Benz range. An 18-month delay was introduced in 1989 to accommodate the model's V12 engine and high-performance braking system. As a result, the final development prototypes were completed in June 1990. Pilot models were produced from June 1990 to January 1991. The W140 introduced innovations such as double-glazed windows, pull-down doors and trunk lid, electric windows that lowered when encountering an obstacle, rear parking markers that extended from the rear fenders (removed in later models and replaced by a sonar-based parking system), and a heating system that continued to emit warm air after the engine was turned off if necessary. Because of details like these, the W140 is often called the last Mercedes to be "redesigned." It is believed that the development of the vehicle cost Mercedes-Benz over $1 billion. The W140 cost about 25 percent more than its predecessor, the W126. Like its predecessor, the car was available in two wheelbases. The 600 SEL W140 (S 600 L from mid-1993) was available with wooden rear ashtray covers, a wood-and-leather gear shift knob, a leather dashboard, and a suede headliner, unlike the V8 and inline-6 models.
The S600L was imported from Japan a few years ago. It is registered in Poland and used sporadically during the summer season, maintaining regular service intervals.
The bodywork and paintwork are in very good condition, free from corrosion. The interior is in perfect condition and, thanks to the high-quality materials used, practically unworn.
The car's equipment is fully functional. Lorinser accessories are included, and full documentation is included.
