The Appeal
Berliet is primarily associated with commercial vehicles and heavy trucks, but the Lyon-based manufacturer also produced a range of refined touring cars during the interwar period. With its nearly two-litre engine and emphasis on comfort, the 1144 Dauphine embodied the marque's ambitions in the private car market at the end of the 1930s. Surviving examples are now extremely rare, making any opportunity to acquire one particularly interesting.
This 1938 example was acquired from the Paris Conservatoire, with its purchase invoice, before its current owner undertook a complete restoration. Carried out over approximately 950 hours, the work covered the bodywork, mechanics, electrics and interior. The chassis was notably zinc-plated and then powder-coated, whilst the car received a fresh coat of paint in an elegant beige and mahogany livery. The cabin was also completely refurbished.
Having covered only 292 km since restoration and having passed its roadworthiness inspection without comment, this Berliet 1144 Dauphine represents a rare opportunity to acquire an uncommon pre-war French motor car, comprehensively restored.

✓ We want the transaction to run smoothly, just as you do, and that's why cars and motorcycles registered in the UK and listed for sale on Car & Classic are subject to an HPI check to verify that they have no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and are not subject to a financial charge, allowing you to bid with confidence.
✓ We also check whether vehicles are registered as written off as a result of a total loss claim at the time the listing is placed on Car & Classic and we provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) to help you. The presence or absence of a label does not, however, guarantee the vehicle's status and it is always useful to carry out a full vehicle history check before making an offer on it.
