1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia 1300GT - Low Drag Alloy Race Car

Highlights

  • One-of-a-kind low-drag alloy-bodied race car, built from a 1967 Alfa Romeo 1300GT in period
  • 180bhp 2L twin-cam Nord engine with 5 speed manual gearbox.
  • Known as the 'Red Submarine' and featured  in 'Auto Italia' and 'Classic Cars' magazines
  • Current keeper for 10 years with continuous improvement
  • Originally registered in Belgium now imported and registered on UK plates
  • Road legal race car with bespoke roll cage and other track-based upgrades

The Appeal

Either Alfa’s designers saw this car, or they drew on its original builder’s influences, because the similarities between the rear-end design of this low-drag racer and the recently revealed CuoreRosso are striking. That cam tail look is just one aspect of what is, by any measure, one of the most striking Alfas we’ve seen in a long time.
The car began life as a 1300GT Giulia before being rebodied early on as a low-drag alloy racer. The current keeper acquired it in Belgium around 10 years ago, choosing to compete it and improve it rather than restore it. The result is a striking, lightweight machine that sits outside the usual Alfa Romeo canon.
The car is track-ready, including what we are told is a UK-legal roll cage, and features a highly modified 1,962cc Alfa Romeo twin cam engine. The vendor describes it as extremely quick and stable on track, and fast and competitive in the right hands. Now road-registered in the UK, this car can be driven to a circuit, raced hard, and driven home again. A versatile and wholly individual piece of Alfa Romeo history.
The vendor says:
“Totally unique part of Alfa Romeo history. Extremely quick and stable racing car, but can be driven on public roads. Turns heads all the time! “
