1951 MG Y Type Saloon

Highlights

• Bare metal respray
• Great condition throughout
• Registered with the International Y Type Register

Background

Designed in the late thirties as saloon addition to MG’s range of Midget sports cars, due to the war, it wasn’t released until 1947.
Described in MGs’ sales brochure at the time as “ A brilliant new member of the fabulous MG breed.

This new one and a quarter litre car perpetuates the outstanding characteristics of its successful predecessors-virile acceleration, remarkable ‘road manner’, instant response to controls and superb braking. A ‘lively’ car, the new one and a quarter provides higher standards of performance”

The History

First registered on the 1st of January 1951 in Sussex, unfortunately little is known of its early life.

Purchased as a rolling restoration in 2013 from Hove, the owner proceeded to have much work done by Simply Classics in West Sussex. Subsequently sold to a chap in Bedfordshire, who then commissioned a complete, bare metal respray from Nick Houghton nr Bedford.

Spied by our vendor for sale with a regional auction house in Bedford, a deal was done, and the MG was whisked off to its new home in West Yorkshire in October 2020.

Now it's back on the market again due to the vendor deciding to downsize his car collection through lack of use. This Y Type MG is recognised & registered with the International Y Type Register.

Paperwork

There is a current V5c registration document, engineers report & restorers reports prior and after some restoration works were carried out.

There is also a receipt for the bare metal respray undertaken in 2014. Please see photos of these.

Interior

A fabulous job has been carried out on the interior as can be seen in the accompanying photos. We would suggest the seats have been recovered at some time as they are in such great condition front and rear.

The dash, carpets & roof lining too are absolutely ready to go and do not require any remediation work, even the rear window blind moves up and down as intended , using a cord & pulley system, no electrics here to worry about. We would suggest that the carpets are recent new additions, although there is no paperwork to support this.

Overall, a superb interior, great wood work on the doors  , a charismatic & authentic ‘50s experience.

Exterior

Obviously, this MG has been extremely well looked after since its restoration work and especially after the exterior re-spray.
The body looks great, excellent shut lines to the doors, sills etc. The chrome is not too shiny and blends in easily to the body.

Underneath would appear to have been sprayed with a satin paint to protect the metal work and is so much better for it.
Sills & chassis rails are very clean and reflect the care and attention which has gone into this restoration.

There are one or two small chips to the paintwork, but no signs of rust were noticed.

Mechanics

The engine started & ticked over steadily once warmed up, with no visible smoke from the exhaust. When moved around for photos, it appeared to engage gears with ease.

It’s believed to have had an engine rebuild, but there are no invoices to back this up. I does however sound extremely smooth and quiet at tick over.

Appeal

A sporting ‘50s saloon should be on everyone’s list of cars to own and this Y type MG fits the bill admirably. Comfy, stylish, able to keep up with modern traffic and easy to maintain.

There’s not many left on the roads, so you’re unlikely to meet another one coming the other way and if you do, I’m sure a big wave would be in order.

With this one, the restoration work appears to have been done well and the finished article would be just at home cruising the Dales or would be welcomed at any classic car run or show in the land.

What a great car to have in the garage and use as intended by its designers back in the late ‘30s.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
