Highlights

  • Rare example of Hudson’s largest, most luxurious Coupe
  • Fifty years of family ownership
  • Good candidate for restoration
  • American registration, all import duties and VAT have been paid.

The Appeal

The Hudson Commodore was a smash hit for the legendary carmaker. Designed by Betty Thatcher, the first female designer employed by a car manufacturer, the car’s sharp stature and impressive interior made for a big, comfortable car that the petrolhead public adored. Plus, powered by the ever-popular Hudson Powerdome, it had quite the spot of tiger in its tank.
This example has been standing in storage for some time, and could do with an extensive restoration. However, it’s a car not often seen in Europe - and should make for a standout in any enthusiast’s collection.

The History and Paperwork

  • Sadly little is known regarding this vehicle’s history
  • Most of this car’s life was spent in California
  • Reportedly owned by one family for fifty years
  • Has been out of use and kept in storage for some time
  • American registration, all import duties and VAT have been paid.

The Interior

  • Interior in need of a restoration throughout
  • Attractive wood dashboard and tan corded upholstery
  • Signature Hudson steering wheel with red rim and chrome enclosure
  • Extensive wear on chrome work, particularly on the dashboard instruments
  • Staining and wear to instrument glasses including a black stain on the clock
  • Damage to steering wheel decoration which obscures the Hudson branding
  • Some wear to the wooden dashboard’s finish
  • Carpets appear well kept with minor wear
  • Some scuffing to the door cards
  • Extensive staining to the headlining
  • Aftermarket Stereo/cassette player fitted
  • Boot is uncarpeted with a decent spare wheel

The Exterior

  • Attractive metallic purple colour scheme
  • Fair overall cosmetic condition, a great candidate to be restored
  • Some bubbling here and there on the paintwork
  • The distinctive grill has been pranged with a dent on the second bar
  • Left hand indicator is missing, with some damage to the enclosure
  • Bumpers and other metal trims are all showing some signs of wear
  • No signs of major paint loss
  • Corrosion to chrome rear window frames
  • Wheels are in decent order with a good set of tyres
  • Underside is reportedly solid

The Mechanics

  • Powered by the Hudson Powerdome, an impressive 6-cylinder 4.3 engine
  • Automatic transmission
  • This car has been sat in storage for some time and will need tuning up
  • Engine bay appears to be in decent order with no obvious major faults we can discern
  • No reports as to how well the car runs

Summary

With its attractive colour scheme, attractive design and that impressive power plant, the Hudson Commodore 6 is very well-reputed - and not often seen in Europe. A bit of spit of polish and you’ll have an all-time classic for hitting the roads.
