1953 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Teviot III by Hooper & Co

Highlights

  • Rare and elegant body by Hooper and Company
  • Impressive history file
  • Lovely condition

The Appeal

The first post-war Rolls-Royce, the Silver Wraith, was supplied as “chassis-only” and bodied by a number of different coach builders.

With a long history in high end coach work, Hooper and Company was amongst the most exclusive and they were responsible for the design and build of arguably the most elegant of all the limousine bodies, the Teviot III.
This example, presented in grey and burgundy, with a grey interior, has a substantial history file which shows evidence of pampering throughout its life. Used by the last owner in Germany to be chauffeured on his commute, it is very original and presents in lovely condition.

While using it for the daily commute may prove to be quite a commitment, we think that this beautiful and well-maintained slice of fifties luxury would make for a fabulous way to travel and will no doubt receive a great deal of positive attention wherever it goes.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 21 July 1953 and reportedly delivered brand new to The United Dominions Trust, which was established to provide hire purchase finance for cars
  • Substantial history file covers maintenance throughout the car’s life
  • Original handbook
  • Three sets of keys
  • Acquired by the last owner in 1989 and taken to Germany where he was chauffeur driven to and from his office in it
  • MOT exempt
  • V5 present

The Interior

  • Superbly appointed
  • Grey leather
  • Complete original toolkit
  • Rear foot rests
  • Picnic tables
  • Cocktail cabinet with decanters
  • Concealed CD player
Hooper and Co. proudly display their Royal endorsement on a plaque inside the door and you too could feel like royalty when you climb aboard this well appointed interior.

Whether in the front or rear, you’d be happy to welcome furnishings of this quality into any of your residences.
The wood work is beautifully finished and has worn incredibly well with only some light patina on one of the picnic tables to show for its years in service.

Naturally, it features a cocktail cabinet which comes replete with a set of decanters and glasses, and there’s also a glass divide for a level of privacy if James is driving you home.
Up front, the dashboard is fit for a king too and, although it has what appears to be the original radio still installed, a modern head unit is concealed in a leather trimmed custom installation.

Throughout the interior, the leather shows a lovely patina and there are no tears or excess wear. The carpets do show a little wear in the front but have useful mats protecting the rear while up above the headlining is very clean with no signs of sagging.
In all, the cabin looks a suitably relaxing place to be.

Back in the capacious boot, meanwhile, the two tier approach keeps the spare wheel and tools nicely separated from the luggage area and, although there’s some marks to the boot floor, it’s all very usable.

The Exterior

  • Body by Hooper and Co. Ltd of London
  • Grey and Burgundy coachwork
  • P100 headlights
With the flowing curves accentuated by two tone paintwork, there’s an elegance to the design of this Rolls-Royce that is hard to beat.

Impressive chrome work and the delightful headlights help to reinforce an air of luxury and it’s no surprise that Hooper & Co. were ultimately absorbed into Daimler.
The car presents very well with excellent paintwork and no scuffs, marks or other damage to report. The chrome is also pristine, as are the wheels, and the tyres wear good tread all round.
The good news continues underneath where it looks very clean and although there’s a small amount of surface corrosion, it’s in remarkable condition for a car of its age.

The Mechanics

  • 4556cc straight six engine
  • Four speed manual gearbox
  • Very quiet and smooth
Under the bonnet the engine bay is clean and original, a sure sign of the love and attention that’s been lavished on it over the years.

The seller reports that the car drives beautifully and is very quiet and smooth on the road with no untoward noises to distract from the calming atmosphere in the cabin.

In all, it’s ready to be enjoyed and should have many more miles and years of enjoyment to come.

Summary

A beautiful example of a rare luxury classic that is sure to impress wherever you go.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
