BACKGROUND


In April 1964 Ford unveiled their eagerly awaited new car to the American car buying public and an instant motoring style icon, the Ford Mustang, was born, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Available at launch in either coupe or convertible form with a choice of straight-six or V8 engines and automatic or 3 or 4 speed manual transmissions, Ford couldn’t make them fast enough as their order books exploded beyond their wildest expectations throughout their American Dealer network.

The first production models, referred to as the 1964 ½ model, are now among the most sought after Mustangs by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

HISTORY


Born on the 26th June 1964, this D-code convertible Mustang was supplied new with some nice factory options. It features a power hood and power steering, and the 289 V8 engine was also specified to come with the optional, and fairly rare, 4-speed floor mounted gearbox.

There is quite a file of paperwork and receipts that date back to the late 70’s that come with this car and it was obviously a very well looked after car as, other than having a re-spray in its original colour of Rangoon Red, this is believed to be an original example, that was imported from the USA and registered in the UK in 2015.

Since importation it has been in the possession of an avid American car collector and enthusiast who has done very little mileage during his time with the car, but has kept it maintained and mostly stored in his garage during his ownership.

It is believed that this car spent a considerable time in a private collection or storage in the USA prior to its importation, and certainly its current overall condition and appearance would reflect that.

PAPERWORK


The V5 is present showing 1 previous UK owner and the car comes with a substantial history file of servicing and works done during its time in America.

The car comes with one key, but copies are easily and readily available.

INTERIOR


The whole original interior looks in very good condition when considering the car’s age. There is no evidence that anything has been replaced or restored in the cabin with carpets, seats and door cards all showing the right amount of wear and tear, or patina if you prefer, for a car that has obviously been very well looked after.

The dashboard is free from any damage or cracks and the car still has the original radio with its offset knobs, which many owners have discarded over the years and cut a hole in the dash to fit a more modern unit. It still works too.

It looks like the handsome wooden steering wheel has been repaired at around the 9 o’clock position, but that’s about it.

Everything looks as it should and the only small niggle is the fuel gauge, which apparently is a little erratic and probably needs a new sender unit.

All the chrome and footplates look good, and the power hood operates nice and smoothly.

EXTERIOR


The exterior has benefitted from its recent re-spray and the overall impression is that of a clean and solid original car, which looks great in its original Rangoon Red.

The bodywork really is in very good condition, with a deep shine and no signs of any rust or paint bubbling up anywhere. There are a couple of small inevitable stone chips but that’s it, with the wire wheels, all fitted recently with new whitewall tyres, and the chrome bumpers and trim all looking very good indeed.

All the lights and glass are nice and clear and all rubber seals look in fine shape too.

The hood is rarely used but does show signs of fading in places and is again believed to be original but it fits well and does its job as it should, and the plastic rear window is not split and is crystal clear.

Under the bonnet, inside the boot and even under the car all look in great condition and certainly don’t set any alarm bells ringing in any department.

MECHANICS


Open the bonnet and you’ll find everything as it should be, with no signs of any oil or coolant leaks.

Mechanically the engine and gearbox are reported to both be very healthy and reflect the relatively low mileage and attention that the car has obviously enjoyed throughout its life.

THE APPEAL


This is a beautiful and original example of a well looked after and iconic American classic car, which has not been subject to any restoration.

It is one of the very first production Mustang models with the 289 V8 engine, manual 4-speed gearbox and handy power steering, power hood, and in the very attractive colour of Rangoon Red with a contrasting black interior.

Exact numbers of the first Mustang convertibles produced seem to be somewhat of a mystery due to Ford’s early records getting destroyed, but you can be sure that there won’t be many Mustangs out there in this condition and specification, so its rarity, future desirability and collectability is beyond question.

If you’re looking for that dream Mustang classic, they rarely get any better than this.
