Highlights

  • Exceedingly original, believed to have never even been repainted
  • Accompanied by a treasure trove of original Mopar spares and the car’s original documentation
  • 440 cu in V8 engine coupled to a three-speed automatic gearbox

The Appeal

Starring in one of, if not the most highly regarded on-screen car chases of all time, the 1968 Dodge Charger shall be forever associated with the film Bullitt. Here we have a fabulous restoration opportunity in the form of this awesome 440 cu in Dodge Charger R/T. Exceedingly original down to its paint and factory spec sheet, this rare survivor is a brilliant starting point for a full restoration and will be an immensely special car once complete.
If you’re looking for a project that you’ll regard as your crowning achievement, this Dodge would be a great candidate.

The History and Paperwork

  • Offered for sale with all its American paperwork and registration
  • All import duties and VAT have been paid
  • Now resides in the Netherlands
  • Lots of documentation present from throughout the car’s history
  • Complete with the original owner’s ‘Certicard’
  • Original dealer sticker in the rear window
  • Factory specification sheet still present
  • Original service manual
  • Has been off the road for many years
  • Requires total restoration but remains fundamentally solid

The Interior

  • Seemingly complete, with its original black vinyl upholstery
  • Requires restoration, although much of the trim appears salvageable
  • All of the instrumentation and switchgear look to remain in place including the radio
As we said, this Dodge has been off the road for a number of years and requires comprehensive restoration work. However, the interior has survived remarkably well and we think much of it can be saved.
The vinyl seat covers do display some tears although certain panels could potentially be repaired and repurposed. The door cards look to be in really good condition with some nice patination on show. While the top of the dashboard has suffered somewhat, the front fascia appears in reasonable condition, with all the gauges and switchgear seemingly still present.
Of course, new carpeting and headlining will be needed as is the case with most restoration projects. We like how there’s little evidence of anyone having started to work upon this interior. Everything appears to be in ‘as left’ condition, which any seasoned restorer will tell you is a great starting point.

The Exterior

  • Believed to be the original white paint work
  • It would appear that a vinyl roof was previously fitted
  • The vendor informs us that the shell is fundamentally sound
The vendor believes that this Dodge still wears its original paint which is pretty miraculous considering that it is 54 years old. We really like the patina it has gathered over time,  and the black stripe on the boot lid is a particularly nice period touch. As a result, there is possibly some scope to restore this car mechanically while leaving some of the age to the paintwork.
There is of course some corrosion, but the vendor informs us that this is mostly confined to the boot floor, the shell itself being very sound indeed. It appears a vinyl roof was fitted and unlike many cars boasting this feature, the roof doesn't seem to have suffered from corrosion as a result.
The chromework is in reasonable shape for its age as are the lights and glass. The wheels appear smart also and look to be original or, at least, period correct.

The Mechanics

  • 440 cu in (7.2-litre) V8 engine
  • Three-speed automatic transmission
  • Appears largely untouched under the bonnet
  • The car has been off the road for many years so will all the mechanicals overhauled

Equipped with the desirable 440 cu in V8, make no mistake, this Charger is a bona fide muscle car through and through.

Having been off the road for a number of years, the mechanicals will of course require careful inspection and most likely complete restoration. Under the bonnet, everything looks largely untouched which is encouraging and we’re sure a capable mechanic will have that V8 snarling before long.

Summary

Alongside the Ford Mustang, the Dodge Charger really is the quintessential American muscle car and this delightfully original example would be a fabulous addition to any collection.
