The Appeal
Introduced in September 1967, the 2.4-litre 240 and 3.4-litre 340 were the ultimate developments of the immensely successful Jaguar Mk2 sports saloon. Intended as new base models, the 240 and 340 were barely distinguishable from each other, and differed from the final Mk2s by virtue of their Ambla upholstery (with leather now optional), slimmer bumpers and the absence of built-in driving lamps. Only the 240 differed significantly from its 2.4-litre Mk2 predecessor, gaining a more-powerful version of the XK six cylinder engine.
It also gained the 4.2-litre-type straight-port cylinder head, twin SU carburettors and a dual exhaust system. Power improved from 120 to 133bhp and top speed increased from 96 to 106mph, while the 0-60mph time was reduced to 12.5 seconds. Only the 240 lasted, albeit briefly, into the XJ6 era, the 340 having been axed in 1968. Whilst it did not have the more sporting credentials of its larger engine siblings, the 240 possesses all the style and refinement associated with Jaguar's classic MK2 saloon; able to cruise comfortably in present-day traffic on motorways with comfortable seating and luggage space for four.
This particular example has covered less than 55,000 miles, probably due to spending some time stored. It was removed from storage in 2020 and has been driven just 31 since it was removed from storage in 2020. Plenty of re-commissioning work has been completed over the past couple of years, and the Jaguar is now ready for the road, starting and driving well. Particular attention has been paid to the mechanical side and the interior. The latter has received a partial re-trim, with new carpets, head lining and rear seat panels.
The dash top and door cappings have been restored at some time in the past and remain in excellent condition. Painted in Old English White with a red interior this Jaguar presents well, with scope for improvement if so desired. Perfect for family trips, with plenty of space, the 240 has always been a superb value entry to classic Jaguar ownership.

Summary
The 240 has always been the bargain of the Jaguar Mk2 range with most buyers hankering after the larger engined 3.8, mainly due to its racing connections. The overlooked 240 has adequate power, even for today’s traffic, and is cheaper to insure and run. With all the interior luxury that Jaguar had to offer and imposing looks it is a really good all-rounder. Sporty looks, lively performance and luxurious seating for four with their luggage; a complete snip!
