THE APPEAL

Iconic, adored, sought after, these are just some of the words that describe Britain's best selling sports car, the mighty MGB. Half a million variants were produced from 1962 until 1980, yet we’ll never get tired of being charmed by these gorgeous cult classics, especially the early models like this 1968 Roadster. This black beauty is in fabulous condition inside and out thanks to spending the majority of its life in the Hollywood hills.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • California registered
  • Imported in 2015
  • UK registered in 2017
  • Used and homed in Spain

This left hand drive MGB Roadster left the Abingdon factory for the dryer climate of California in 1968 where it spent the majority of its life touring around the Hollywood Hills up until its export back to the UK in 2015. Numerous invoices, receipts and documented maintenance are present for its time in the famous golden state including original registration card.

The current owner purchased the vehicle in 2017 and immediately took the vehicle to their Spanish address where it has been kept up until recent months. The car has had no bodywork restoration post 2017 but it is believed that some work may have been carried out either before arriving in the UK or during the 2015 import and 2017 UK registration date. Additional paperwork includes a heritage certificate plus a substantial invoice from Spirits of Speed / Rolls Royce Barcelona for work carried out in 2020.

THE INTERIOR

  • Fantastic condition
  • Black leather seats
  • Undocumented Retrim
Inside the MGB you're greeted with comfortable and pleasant black leather seats, plus door cards and carpets to match. There's a familiar theme here, black dash and black dials are accompanied by chrome surrounds and switches, it's a subtle but tasteful design with no sign of wear or use anywhere.

It’s likely a restoration was carried out in the past, but other than the obvious superb condition there’s no paperwork to support this, if true it’s been kept to its beautiful, original design with nothing aftermarket visible, a very splendid job indeed. Sitting in these wonderful cars truly is an outstanding experience, you feel very grounded, yet comfortable, top down brings the ultimate enjoyment, there’s nothing quite like being sat in a British sports car with the sun beaming down.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Sublime condition
  • Black paint in great condition
  • New black hood
  • Fantastic chromework & trim
  • Small dent on bonnet

The beauty of the MGB cannot be escaped, especially in early roadster form. Bright, gleaming chrome bumpers, beautiful wire wheels, attractive styling and low sporty stance are all present on this car, no wonder it’s one of the best selling British Sports Cars ever made. The car was likely repainted and chrome replaced as it’s just too good to be original, there’s no evidence to suggest this but common sense tells us it must have been done at some point.

The only blemish we could spot is the tiniest of dents on the bonnet which we have tried to photograph but it's so minimal it proved difficult and something a specialist paintless dent repair shop should be able to sort easily. The black hood is like new and matches the interior splendidly. The black on black theme is an attractive combination and really allows the chrome details to stand out. Overall, a superb example of the British classic.

THE MECHANICS

  • Starts and runs smoothly
  • New overdrive

On arrival the car was driven to a nearby location for the photographer and started easily multiple times as it was manuverd. The 1.8L ran smoothly without any dramatics or concerns, no double testament to the comprehensive work carried out in 2020 by Rolls Royce in Barcelona.

In summary this work included installation of a new overdrive unit, new head gasket, a new shock absorber, new steering rack, new slave cylinder plus new oil and filter, an image of the invoice has been included which shows the complete work. It’s also worth noting the mileage on the car isn’t accurate, it’s unsure whether it has clocked over the 100,000 or reset when restored.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
