- Restored to an excellent standard
- Galvanised chassis
- Full respray
The Triumph TR5 was produced for only 13 months but marks a turning point in the evolution of the ever-popular TR series of sports cars. While it appeared to be visually similar to the TR4 it succeeded, the TR5’s innovation was to be found under its bonnet. A fuel-injected straight-six engine replaced the TR4’s carburetted four-cylinder, allowing it to produce 150bhp, a nearly 50% increase in power.
This particular TR5 has been the subject of a comprehensive restoration, initially carried out in the ‘90s and it has been resprayed more recently. The chassis is said to have been galvanised and the vendor reports that the car has been kept in a ‘Carcoon’ and only used on dry days.
The History and Paperwork
- Manufactured 6th August 1968

- Restored in 1993-97
- Resprayed in 2016
- MoT and Road Tax exempt
- Heritage certificate
- 4 owners since new

- Smart veneered dashboard and Moto-Lita steering wheel
Upon sinking into the comfortable dark blue seats with contrasting white piping, the driver is presented with a wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel in front of a well kitted out dashboard, dominated by the large diameter rev counter and speedometer. There is a full complement of auxiliary gauges to keep the driver informed of the car’s condition.
All the switchgear and ancillaries are in pleasantly used condition, with only light signs of wear. The only reported issues are that the radio and the door locks are not currently working. We could see some corrosion to one of the heater pipe joiners, situated above the driver's footwell, but everything else appears to be in very good order.
In all, the interior of this TR5 is a very pleasant place to be. Its condition is a credit to its restorer and its owner.
- Resprayed in 2016
- Galvanised chassis
- Chrome plated wire wheels
The unmistakable TR styling looks great in this shade of white. It was reportedly subject to a full respray in 2016, and has only been used on dry days since. Therefore, it remains in excellent condition, along with the rest of the exterior fittings.
The fabric hood (new in 2016) is clean, tidy and fits well, and the chrome plating is presentable, if a little pitted. It sits on four wire wheels, which have been replaced recently, with tyres (fitted in 2018) said to retain good tread and a full sized spare in the boot.
Underneath, the vendor reports that there are no signs of corrosion and that the chassis has been galvanised. It is clear that the car has rarely been used in inclement weather by the state of its undercarriage. The panels appear to be straight, true and well fitted.
- Six-cylinder fuel injected engine
- Suspension overhauled
- Extensive invoices for mechanical work
The powerful six-cylinder engine benefits from fuel injection, still an innovative feature in the ‘60s. This allows for spritely performance by the standards of the day.
According to the vendor, this Triumph has benefitted from specialist servicing whenever necessary, with documentation going back to the 1970s.
The suspension was overhauled in 2018 and the engine is said to have been recently serviced.
This TR5 offers a fantastic opportunity to acquire a restored example of this very capable classic British sports car. It has undergone a full respray recently and has had mechanical attention whenever necessary.
The condition of the car is clear to see, and the vendor’s statement that it has been well stored and only used on dry days would be hard to dispute.
In all, this TR5 will make an excellent addition to any garage and is ready to be used or preserved however its next owner sees fit.
