The Appeal

The VW Beetle is perhaps the most recognizable vehicle of all time, arguably in a contest with the iconic Mini Cooper in terms of retro popularity.

First introduced formally as the Volkswagen Type 1 in 1938, the Beetle, or “Bug” as it is often affectionately named, is the most produced vehicle of a single design platform of all time.
These air-cooled, rear-engined cars are known the world over and have amassed a huge following in the classic car world. Today, clean examples with original features are becoming few and far between, as many fall to the usual signs of age and rust.

This particular example, however, is a shining example of a well-cared-for Beetle, with a characterful past.

The History and Paperwork

  • Just 1 former keeper
  • Treasured by the same family since 1976
  • Garage stored for the last 30 years
  • Well cared for and maintained
  • Original service booklet included
This Beetle has a charming past, having spent close to fifty years in the same family.

The current owner has treasured this vehicle since its purchase in 1976 and has relied on the car throughout multiple generations of the family. For the last 30 years, the car has been dry stored in the garage, in hopes of preserving the vehicle for future use.

Today, the years of storage have helped this fine example be one of the few still surviving today.

It is truly with great sadness that this vehicle is ready to be passed to its next home, but the current keeper can reflect upon decades of enjoyable memories made with this car.
In terms of paperwork, the vehicle comes with the original maintenance manual, and original service booklet stamped within. The vehicle also includes the original logbook and registration document.

The Interior

  • Original interior
  • Impressive condition
  • Well-cared-for
  • Fitted with seat belts
The interior of this retro VW is mightily impressive.

Upon opening the door, you’re greeted to an original interior that has been very well preserved over the years, despite the mileage. The condition of the original seats and headliner are a true testament to the build quality of classic Volkswagens, as seen with the Type 1 and Type 2 platforms.
Both front seats are in excellent condition, showing only minor signs of age. The rear bench follows suit, despite having likely been used for many enjoyable family trips out.

Other than signs of age beginning to show on the sun visors, the headliner and pillars are also in surprisingly great condition, especially when compared to other vehicles of the era.
With only a minor amount of age beginning to show on the steering wheel and various controls, the interior has certainly held up remarkably well over the years.

Both door cards, the dashboard, instruments, and carpets throughout the vehicle look excellent for their age, clearly reflecting the vehicle’s care-filled past.
Overall, the interior condition certainly cannot be understated and deserves to be witnessed in person.

If you’re in the market for an example with an original interior, or fancy stepping back in time to 1968, this is the one for you.

The Exterior

  • Mostly original
  • New wings and mudguards
  • Excellent condition
  • Royal Red paintwork
  • Retro VW aesthetics
Much like the inside of the vehicle, the exterior is in fantastic condition for its age and is believed to be mostly original other than new wings and mud guards.

The Royal Red paintwork is a rather peculiar colour that first appears subdued in the shade but then takes on vibrant tones in the bright sunlight as pictured.

The paintwork itself is in excellent condition, with only a few minor signs of age.
All 4 wheels are in fair condition given their age, but would certainly benefit from a refurbishment if the patina style isn’t what you’re looking for. Unfortunately due to the car being stored for quite some time, it isn’t advised to conduct a long trip on the current tyres, which will need replacing by the new owner.
The lights, badging, and trim pieces are in fair condition for their age, with minor signs of corrosion and pitting beginning to show where a mirror finish once stood.

If you’re looking to preserve the vehicle as intended, this certainly offers a tasteful amount of characterful aging.
The current owner has highlighted that they believe the underside to be showing signs of minor corrosion, but hardly enough to detract from the rest of the car’s charm and condition.
Overall, this VW Beetle looks spectacular after all this time, and will no doubt continue to fill the lucky owner with pride upon each glance.

Its retro body lines have been well preserved, and the car stands above the majority of mostly original examples on the market.

The Mechanics

  • 1285cc air-cooled engine
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Rear engined
  • Starts right away and performs without fault
It’s rather easy to believe why the platform became so popular over the years, especially when you consider just how dependable these cars are, and how easy they are to live with.

Even after all this time, this characterful VW fires up and happily tootles along as intended.
As the original service booklet reflects, the car received main dealer servicing with the previous owner and has since been maintained by the current owner, as many classic vehicle owners do.

In addition to the above, the car was recently driven to a specialist VW garage for a timing check and driven back to its garage entirely under its own steam.
With no mechanical or electrical issues to report, this Beetle will no doubt put a smile on the face of anyone fortunate enough to take it for a spin.

Summary

This quirky VW Beetle presents buyers with a fantastic opportunity to own a mostly original example of one of the most sought-after classics of all time.

Not only does the car look and perform in spectacular fashion, but the vehicle also benefits from an incredibly care-filled past, and has been treasured by the current keeper.

Whether you’re looking for a new collection piece, fancy a trip down memory lane, or simply seek the thrill of an air-cooled VW, this is the perfect car for you.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
