Highlights
- Reconditioned 2,000cc flat-four 914 engine
- Hewland gearbox
- Rare ‘Formula Super Vee’ racer
- Tubular space-frame with aluminium tub
The Appeal
Run from 1970 to 1990, the Formula Super Vee series offered a more affordable and accessible way into professional motorsport. WIth lightweight race cars and charismatic ‘boxer’ engines, it made for close and exhilarating racing, with events held across the US and Europe.
Produced by the legendary Lola race team, this is chassis 039. We’re told that this is a 1970 car, but we believe it may have been fitted with later bodywork from a Series 2 T320. Whatever the case, this is a very rare and desirable racer, fitted with a rebuilt Porsche 914 engine and Hewland gearbox, it would make for a fantastic hill-climb car or track day special.
The History and Paperwork
- Believed to be one of two examples built
- Chassis number 039
- Perfect for hill climb events
The Interior
- Custom single seat
- Small diameter racing wheel
- Stubby gear-shifter to the right of the wheel
- Racing tachometer
- Smiths oil temperature and pressure gauges
- Sabelt harnesses appear to have seen better days and would probably require replacement for competition use
- As a race car, the interior is very sparse, but what is there presents in good, used condition and the vendor assures us that everything works as it should
The Exterior
- Stylish blue and yellow Lola livery
- Tubular space-frame with aluminium tub
- Polished ‘Sebring’ side mirrors on wide arms
- Large, single plane rear wing
- The livery appears to be well finished, with some minor scratches and blemishes as you’d expect from a track car
- We couldn’t identify any notable damage or corrosion
- Four-spoke 13-inch alloy wheels, stamped with ‘Lola’ branding
- Slick Yokohama tyres show some evidence of cracking to the sidewalls
The Mechanics
- Fully reconditioned flat-four, 2,000cc Porsche 914 engine
- Dry sump lubrication
- Twin carburettors
- Hewland gearbox
- Fully adjustable suspension
Summary
Whether you’re looking for a competitive hill climb car or something rare and stylish to take to track days and events, this handsome Lola racer would be absolutely perfect. With that burbling flat-four and snappy Hewland transmission, it should be an absolutely fantastic driving experience.
