The Appeal

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL is an iconic luxury car, but it most certainly isn’t a one-trick pony. In 1970, the AMG division’s original founders created a Touring Car racing variant of the opulent limousine dubbed the Red Pig. This, Mercedes’ first foray into Motorsport after the deadly Le Mans crash of 1955, rapidly gained the name Red Pig due to its size in comparison to its opponents. Despite its obvious disadvantage, the model often seen as the first AMG model managed to win its class at the 1971 Spa 24 Hours finishing the race second overall.

Since then, the car has remained in the Mercedes Hall of Fame inspiring many to replicate it using existing 300 SEL models. That was indeed the fate of this 1970 example which was imported to the UK from America by its current owner. With too many projects on their plate, the car is being moved into new hands.

Fitted with a full roll cage, the car is ready to be turned into a full-on racer though all the original parts are included in the sale. As such, this is also an excellent base for a full-scale restoration project.

History and Paperwork

  • First registered in the USA in 1970
  • Imported to the UK by current owner
  • Bought as a project with the intention of turning it into a Red Pig replica racecar
  • The car is not registered in the UK and is not road legal
  • NOVA is present with the car
  • Replica transformation plans abandoned due to the current owner not having the time
  • All removed parts included in the sale
  • Engine and gearbox believed to be original and entirely present

Notice to bidders: Parts in the background not directly related to the car are excluded from the sale

The Interior

  • Steering wheel looks good for the most part
  • Black leather dashboard looks to be in relatively good condition
  • Wood trim also looks good
  • Seemingly the original stereo, dials and switches are all present
  • Rollcage fitted since importation to the UK, part of the racecar transformation plans
  • Much of the interior trim has been stripped
  • Everything removed from the interior comes with the car upon sale
  • Electric windows
  • Interior floor looks clean for the most part, bar obvious signs of age
  • Remaining door cards in the rear present signs of age
  • Seats and carpets were previously disposed of as they were not thought to be required for the race car build

The Exterior

  • Bodywork looks in good, straight condition overall
  • Chrome pieces still fitted to the car look clean
  • Wheels in fair condition, original hub caps are with the car
  • Black tape covers exposed bodywork in places
  • Removed pieces such as lights all included in the sale
  • Paint peeling in places
  • Tyres will surely need replacing before use
  • Signs of corrosion around the wheel arches in particular

The Mechanics

  • 6.3-litre V8 engine, 250hp
  • Four-speed automatic transmission
  • The vendor suspects everything is present under the bonnet as it should be
  • The car hasn’t run in a while

Summary

Despite looking sorry for itself having been stripped since entering UK soil, this 1970 Mercedes 300 SEL provides the perfect starting point for a large-scale restoration. Be it towards a racing replica of the iconic Red Pig or back to its glory days of road worthiness, the car has great potential as all the original parts are still with the car.
