The Background

Unveiled at the London Motor Show on the 20th of September 1948 the Morris Minor would go on to grace the roads of the world until it was retired in 1971. In its two-decade production run over 1.6 million units were made and sold in many different body types.

Initially, it was launched as only the 2-door saloon and tourer versions, but the range soon expanded in 1953 to include the beautiful wooden framed estate version or traveller. Without the cheap but cheerful Morris Minor, it would’ve been difficult for Britain to get back on the road after the Second World War. These days the ‘Moggie’ is an easily recognisable piece of British automotive design.

The History

Would you believe that in its 51-year life there have only been two owners of this exceptional looking car? It would appear that from new until only a few years ago the car resided in the Winchester area where the first owner seems to have looked after it enough to keep it going in a modern world. A few years ago, now Charles Ware in Bristol, former specialists in all things Morris Minor, got their hands on this example which at that time required a full restoration.

When it arrived at their workshop it went straight in for restoration. However, even before it had any work done, it was remarked that the body, chassis, and original interior were all in good condition. As part of the restoration it was resprayed, the wooden frame was bought back to life and the underside was wax injected and undersealed.

The current owner has only had it a couple of years, but they have looked after it meticulously, keeping it in a garage and never taking it out in the rain. It is thanks to this that it still looks like it has just finished its restoration period.

The Paperwork

There is a sizeable folder of paperwork that comes with the car but it is mainly modern history and there isn’t any paperwork from its time before the current owner.

The new owner will be getting the usual V5, modern MOT certificates (even though it is MOT exempt) and a few assorted invoices. One of the important pieces of paperwork shows that during the restoration period the current owner optioned a five-star package and alternator conversion which is vital for modern motoring.

The Interior

The interior of the stunning Moggie is in excellent condition with the striking red seats being totally original. Even though they may be 50 years old they do not have any rips, tears, or any stains on them.

When you open the door of this Minor 1000 not only are you transported back to a time gone by but you are greeted with lovely new metal kick strips, a massive classic Smiths speedometer and a steering wheel that shows little to no signs of use.

With this being the traveller version, you benefit from a bigger space for both the boot and rear seats not only do you get the added space, but you also get parts of the exquisite exterior wooden frame coming inside.

It is possibly thanks to the one owner from new and the recent restoration period that the interior the new owner will inherit is immaculate. With this being the part of the car, you will spend the most time in so it is vital that it is in perfect condition and you will be hard-pressed to find another one in this condition on the market currently.

The Exterior

Wow, the exterior of this car is in perfect condition. The body has undergone a full respray and is now finished in the same deep black that it left the factory in 1970, it is a stunning colour and twinned with the refurbished wheels and the shiny hubcaps it stands out in the crowd.

The main part of the Traveller version of the Morris 1000 is the wooden frame that wraps around the rear half of the car. You will be happy to hear that this frame is in excellent condition. During the restoration period, it was remarked that the frame was already in good condition however it still went through a process of sanding and recoating. Within the paperwork there is a piece of literature about how Charles Ware reconditions the frame, it also provides instructions should the new owner decide to recoat it in the future.

The new owner will be purchasing a Morris Minor 1000 Traveller which requires no bodywork, no worrying about the wooden frame and a truly classic looking body design. This is possibly one of the most loved and most recognisable classic cars on the UK roads so you will be getting a car that will turn heads and make people smile whenever you drive past.

The Mechanics

The mechanical aspects, as you would expect from a recently restored classic, are in perfect working condition. The iconic BMC A-series engine fires straight up into life with no hesitation and purrs away nicely on tick over, it may not be the most powerful engine in the world, but it is one of the most well-known engines and is more than adequate to pull the little 1000 along. The 4-speed gearbox works well with no clutch slip or juddering.

A couple of parts that have been replaced include a new radiator late last year to eradicate the leaking issue that was present. Also, as part of the restoration process, the option was there to install a few modern features, these include a new ignition coil, new distributor cap and leads, a new battery, a new genuine s.u. fuel pump and new foot brake master cylinder.

If you open the bonnet you will also find a modern alternator to provide a more constant power output. If you take a look under the car you will see that it has been professionally waxoyled to prevent any future issues with rust. A little detail that should give the new owner peace of mind that the chassis and underbody components will be good for another 50 years of service.

One small detail to take into account is that although it is exempt from needing an MOT the current owner put it through one anyway, it passed with no advisories another indication of the condition of this car.

Overall the mechanical aspects of this car are as near to perfect that you can get, it is a simple turn of the key and you’ll be ready to go. A far cry from many experiences of classic motoring.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
