1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

**Kindly note that this car is being re-auctioned due to a Buyer withdrawing on a previous sale, for reasons entirely unrelated to the condition of the vehicle**

Highlights

  • Impressive example of the legendary Ghia
  • 1.6L engine with 4-speed manual transmission
  • Valid inspection until 2029

The Appeal

Introduced in 1956, the Karmann Ghia is often seen as ‘The Sporty Beetle’. That’s not a detriment to the car - it was fairly accurate. With the Beetle’s reliable running gear packed into a simply exceptional Carrozzeria Ghia styling package, and now-iconic Karmann bodywork - which was smoothed out with English Pewter to create a simply exceptional, streamlined and, crucially, lightweight car that could hold its own pretty nicely on the road.

This example comes to us in fine fettle, with plenty of time on its technical inspection and a beguiling interior that’s been exceptionally well-kept.

The History and Paperwork

  • Sadly we don’t know very much about the history of this car
  • Built in 1970
  • First registered in Denmark in 2022
  • Passed latest Technical Inspection in 2021
  • Next inspection not due until 2029
  • Car complex complete with Danish title paperwork
  • Odometer indicates 25,219km on a five-figure indicator
  • Unfortunately as a result we can’t confirm this as an authentic mileage

The Interior

  • Impressive period interior with black vinyl seats
  • Tidy, if rather lightly instrumented dashboard
  • Appears to be complete without with no missing nobs, dials or switches
  • All instruments appear clean and easy to read
  • Boasting an attractive two-spoke Volkswagen steering wheel
  • Vinyl seats in excellent order with no rips or tears
  • Door cards are nicely kept with wood effect to the upper vinyl
  • Some light pitting to the chromework, though nothing minor
  • We can spot some marks to the headlining, but far from major
  • Carpets are in good order with no rips or tears
  • ‘Frunk’ is in excellent order with no corrosion we can spot
  • Complete with an excellent spare wheel

The Exterior

  • Highly impressive external styling makes the Ghia a truly beautiful car
  • No dents or dings in the bodywork we’re able to discern
  • Excellent yellow paintwork with only minor signs of wear
  • Some pitting and light losses to the chrome bumpers
  • Glasswork and lenses look in good order with no chips or fractures
  • Carrying VW-branded wheels, which are in fair order
  • Shod in a full set of Yokohama tyres, which look to be in good order

The Mechanics

  • Powered by the later 1600cc Flat-4 engine
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Engine is in excellent order with no faults we can discern
  • We’ve no reports of any leaks, bangs, knocks or smoke from the engine bay
  • The car is reportedly starting, running, braking and shifting with no issues
  • Valid inspection until May 2029
  • No reported mechanical modifications
  • Recently been serviced in-house by the vendor

Summary

An excellent example of a Ghia is always something to be prized. Mechanically simple, beautifully styled and lightweight enough to provide a decent running pace, these cars are great examples of a useable, trusty classic.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
