THE APPEAL

Styled by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro when he was only 19 years old – and as an employee of the Bertone studio - the original Alfa Romeo GT Junior became one of the most desirable cars of the late Sixties and early Seventies, evolving into the 1750 and 1750 GTV models from 1971 onward, with flatter frontal styling and larger, more powerful evolutions of the legendary Alfa Twin Cam engine.

Desirable when new, they’re hugely collectable today with a very strong following across the UK and Europe, thanks in no small part to their delicate styling and agile dynamics, which feel incredibly modern for cars of the era.

This one – a Series II 1750 GTV model - is freshly imported from South Africa, where it has been fully restored in its original pale blue colour scheme and has been owned by the same keeper for over 30 years. The restoration work is fully documented and included a bare-metal respray.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Owned by previous keeper since early 1990s
  • Freshly imported from South Africa, previously from dry Johannesburg region
  • Restored in 2022-23 with all invoices for parts and restoration (currently en route from South Africa, so not illustrated)
  • Over £8,000 spent on parts from Classic Alfa specialists
  • Photographic record of rebuild
  • Tax, MOT and ULEZ exempt
  • The seller has completed all of the import and duty paperwork relative to the car so there are no additional taxes to pay, while the DVLA NOVA notification and original South African registration document are included.
  • Vendor is also happy to help the buyer register the car in the UK if that’s where it remains after it is sold - the process is very simple and costs less than £100 to complete.

THE INTERIOR

  • Retrimmed black leather
  • Wooden dash with stainless steel highlights
  • Wood-rimmed steering wheel restored by piano polisher
  • Excellent carpets and headlining

The Alfa’s black leather seats have been retrimmed during its restoration, using seat coverings from Classic Alfa, and are in excellent condition, while the rest of the cabin is in equally impressive order.

The carpets and door cards are in exceptional condition, and the headlining is in matching good condition, having been retrimmed. One of the car’s most delicate features is its delightful wood-rimmed steering wheel, which has just been restored by a piano polisher.

All of the internal rubbers and door seals have been replaced, such is the detail applied to the restoration.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Restored condition
  • Gorgeous pale blue paint
  • Very good chrome and trim
  • Bare metal respray

Like all GTVs, this one looks sensational, partly due to its inarguably beautiful styling, but also because of its overall condition.

It has just been restored in South Africa following 30 years of ownership, and was stripped down to bare metal and repainted in its original colour. It’s freshly finished and looks beautiful, with no evidence of any damage or corrosion anywhere.

The wheels have been powder-coated and fitted with new hub caps, while a new set of Firestone tyres completes the look. All of the chrome, trim and light lenses are in good order.

THE MECHANICS

  • 1,750cc Twin Cam
  • Five-speed manual
  • Drives superbly
  • Excellent under-bonnet presentation

Under the bonnet you’ll find Alfa Romeo’s legendary twin cam engine – a lively unit with a wonderful soundtrack and a rev-hungry nature. It’s a terrific engine with a well-earned reputation for being an all-time classic, presented here in 1750 form with 113bhp, fed to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.

It has recently benefitted from a 1-2-3 electronic ignition system, rebuilt carbs, a new stainless exhaust system, brand-new clutch and replacement brake discs and pads.

We were able to conduct a short test drive of the car and can confirm that it is a wonderful thing to drive, with a smooth-shifting five-speed transmission and eager performance. The brakes, steering and suspension all seem to work without fault and it holds a steady temperature and an even idle.

SUMMARY

This is a lovely example of an all-time Alfa Romeo classic, finished in a gorgeous colour and in terrific, newly restored condition. It’s a delicate and beautifully styled car, presented in wonderful condition and in need of nothing. One to use, show and enjoy whilst inevitably falling in love with it at the same time.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
