The Appeal
With their big ‘greenhouse’ windows, those all-important grills and a lower ride, the W108/W109 was a big deal when it was released - and is still pretty impressive to this day, particularly if you can get one of the V8 examples.
Lucky you - that’s exactly what we have here. With a lesser-spotted velour and corduroy interior, an attractive silver colour scheme and a lovely 3.5L V8, this is an exceptional example of the big, luxury motor. We’d argue it’s a must see!

The Interior

It’s no secret that Mercedes-Benz are one of the all-time greats when it comes to a car’s interior trim - and this 280SE acts as a great ambassador to that effect. Rich velour in the seats, edged by green corduroy fabric, sitting ahead of a beautifully veneered dashboard. It’s a seriously well-appointed car.
All of the fabric is in excellent order, with only the slightest sag to the seats. We can’t discern any staining, rips, scuffs or tears in the upholstery, nor in the soft carpets that line the vehicle’s floor.
This extends nicely to the door cards, which are wrapped in brown fabric, black MB-Tex and the slightest hints of chromework. All of this looks to be in exceptional condition, right through to the locks and handles which show the slightest signs of wear.
The pleasantly veneered dashboard is in excellent order, carrying a nicely organised platoon of gauges and dials. The raised, deep-set gauge pinnacle particularly caught our eye, as did the original radio still nestled into its mount. All of the instruments appear clean and well-kept. This car also comes with electric windows and air conditioning, with which no faults have been reported.
Round the back, the boot is in good order with a good spare wheel and no major signs of wear underneath the mat.
The Exterior

With a gently curving grill and attractive, pronounced headlights, the 280SE carries a wonderfully organic but bold, strait-laced shape across its panels. Finished in an attractive - and some would say almost ubiquitous - silver-grey colour scheme, this example has been repainted at some point in the last six years, and it shows. Beautifully matched to its coloured alloys, it really looks the part.
We can’t discern any marked chips or paint loss across the board. The chromework carries a gentle pattering of patina, but it provides little to no negative impact to the car’s overall appearance. The iconic grill looks almost pristine, along with the large bumpers.
The colour-matched alloys do have some light chipping and paint loss, with patina to the chrome, but still present very, very nicely.
Underneath, the car is showing minimal signs of wear, with only gentle signs of pitting. Overall, it’s an exceptional example, that does very little to betray its venerable age.
The Mechanics

Similar to its cosmetic condition, this 280SE shows very little fault in its operation. The vendor reports no mechanical issues, with gear changes, acceleration, starting and braking all working faultlessly. Revisione is valid until 31st of January 2023.

Beautifully appointed, powerful and nicely designed, this 280SE is a great introduction to Mercedes-Benz’s legendary reputation for big, luxurious sedans.
