The Appeal
Do you want to own a piece of racing history? This is an official Dealer Team Vauxhall car, raced by none other than seventies racing royalty Gerry Marshall and achieving notable success in the hands of Willy Braillard and Rene Tricot in the 1977 Spa 24 hour race where it placed 8th overall and was part of the team that secured the Constructor’s Trophy. Presented in iconic Gulf colours and with the original team branding still in place, it is believed to be the only surviving car from the team of three and was a former exhibit at the Spa Francorchamps museum where it was properly cared for and received a full mechanical overhaul in 2014.
In as-raced condition inside and out, with straight bodywork and mechanically ready to go, this car is a collector’s item which could also be taken racing again with the necessary updates to its safety equipment. We think that it would be a glorious sight out on the racetrack again but would equally understand if the next owner chose to preserve it in its current state. If you want the choice to be yours then get your bid in now!
To climb into the cabin of this car is to enter the seventies professional racing driver’s place of work. It’s been kept completely original which means that the seat, for example, has seen better days but then even if you decided to go racing again and replaced it with a newer FIA-compliant item, you would surely want to keep hold of the currently installed period bucket seat and Schroth harnesses.
The dashboard is remarkably complete and adorned with a smattering of additional dials and switches. Rest assured though that the starting procedure will be fully explained to the new owner! The boot houses a repositioned fuel tank which, like all of the safety equipment, will need to be reviewed for its suitability prior to going racing again but even if it were just to be used for trackdays, this car clearly belongs on a race track.
Following its success at Spa in 1977, this car was immortalised as a diecast model and it still wears the same insignia (minus the race number) to this day. Life on the racetrack can be tough and naturally the car did suffer from some minor racing incidents during its competition years but the resulting dents have been long since removed, with photographs demonstrating the work that was carried out. The bodywork is now straight and true, and the whole car presents well although, as a race car, it’s clearly not a concours car.
The underside is reported to be in good condition, showing only surface corrosion and no signs of any damage. The wheels are in very good condition and wear a matching set of Yokohama tyres which were fitted as part of the 2014 refresh. There are a pair of spotlights in the boot which are not currently fitted but would complete the 24 hour racer look and we would be very tempted to get them reinstalled.
The 2.3 litre race engine was apparently good for 185hp and, following the refresh carried out in 2014, is said to race well but, should the worst happen, there’s an extensive set of spares including two engines which come with the car. Naturally we’d advocate a thorough review of all mechanical elements before heading out to the track in anger but the ingredients all look to be there for a thrilling time on the circuit.
A rare opportunity to acquire a piece of racing history that can be preserved or taken racing again, according to the next owner’s desire.

About Max Bids
The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.
Anti-sniping
Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.
Auto-bidding increments
If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Automatically outbid immediately
When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.
Matching max bids
When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
What are pre-bids?
A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.
