1972 VW T2 Westfalia Wide Bed Pick Up

Highlights

 • Genuine RHD version
 • Extremely rare model worldwide
 • Mechanically restored by Fellows Speed Shop

The Appeal

This is an almost unique opportunity to acquire a superb example of one of the rarest Volkswagens in existence. They were only produced for two years and most were left hand drive. In excellent and reliable running order and is almost certainly an ideal classic vehicle investment. With its drop down sides and rear panels to provide a large and totally flat load bed it is also incredibly practical.

These pickups were actually used to transport Porsche 356 race cars! A superb base for any number of uses from museum exhibit to a very useable workhorse and much more. This vehicle would be a huge draw at any Classic show.

The History and Paperwork

  • Major mechanical restoration by Fellows Speed Shop
  • MOT’d until September 2022 with no advisories
  • Excellent MOT history supplied
  • Original panels
  • Original seating
  • V5
The history folder contains invoices from Fellows Speed Shop totalling £8,458.70 for work carried out by the previous owner up to 2020; a clear indication that no expense has been spared in restoring the mechanics of the vehicle to a great usable condition, a fact supported by all subsequent MoT tests being passed with no advisories.

The current owner purchased the vehicle in October 2020.

The Interior

 • Original bench seating
 • Renewed head lining and carpet
 • Modern Stereo fitted
The seats and door panels are completely original and in good condition having been well cared for yet carrying the wonderful patina which cannot be reproduced. The headlining and carpet were replaced some 4 years ago and a modern radio is fitted with speakers subtly built in behind the seats.

A modern leather rimmed steering wheel and fire extinguisher has been fitted. These were practical base model workhorses and VW never installed a heater so wrap up warmly if you decide to do some winter motoring! There is the original interior light fitted at the back of the cab.

The windscreen has a blue shade band along the top, a surprising luxury option for such a basic vehicle. The minimalist dashboard is in excellent condition

The Exterior

 • Delightful period colour
 • Genuine wear and tear visible
 • Fully functioning and practical flat bed
 • Refurbished and powder coated wheels
This classic pickup wears its long history with pride and close examination of the delightfully period beige paintwork reveals that it was originally blue, then white, then orange. Lifting the engine cover reveals the original blue paint but the engine bay is now beige to match the body and is very clean.

There are age related marks on the body, with a few rust patches and small paint bubbles which have been deliberately retained. All welding and structural work has been carried out so the new custodian will have a very solid base to enjoy as it is, rub down to create a rat rod or carry out a bare metal respray to totally restore it to concours condition.

A new tow bar has been fitted, making it ideal to take a trailer or caravan along to stay in when at distant car shows. The ‘Treasure Chest’ storage locker beneath the bed is full width, fully restored and surprisingly capacious. A handy feature on these vehicles is that one key operates all locks.

The Mechanics

 • Rebuilt 1600cc engine
 • Structurally well maintained
 • Ready to go ‘Turnkey’ proposition
This is the crossover version featuring disc brakes, recent new pads and shoes in rear, including brake lines and hoses. Further work carried out in the last 4 years includes new wiring loom and a full 1600cc twin port engine rebuild with vintage speed exhaust. It starts on the key first time and has a reassuringly smooth idle.

The wheels have been powder coated and 4 new tyres fitted along with new shock absorbers and fully adjustable spring plates. All work was carried out by Fellows Speed Shop.

I have been assured by the owner that the gear change is precise and the vehicle can reach 70mph downhill. Uphill a change down to third gear may sometimes be needed!

Summary

An almost unique opportunity to buy a most appealing and extremely rare classic Volkswagen in a particularly usable and roadworthy condition.

The next owner has the chance to take this wonderfully unusual machine in a variety of directions after purchasing, whether that be a full restoration to concours or the growingly popular ‘Rat’ look, one thing is for sure, it is likely to be the only one at the show! Like I’ve said before, ‘find me another’.

Whichever way you’d want to go this VW is almost certainly a once only opportunity to own something very special indeed.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
