1973 Triumph TR6

Highlights

  • Restored by the vendor after purchasing it in 2005
  • Upgraded fast road engine, braking system, with stiffer, lowered suspension and adjustable shock absorbers
  • Running and driving really well with an MOT valid until January 2024
  • Treated to a full body off nut and bolt restoration by the vendor

The Appeal

Many regard the Triumph TR6 as one of the last of the proper British roadsters. Under the bonnet, the tried and tested straight-six formula is once again put into practice and, when this 1973 example was last dyno tested, it recorded an impressive 180 bhp.
The vendor purchased this TR6 in 2005 and set about restoring it with the aim of making it a great driver rather than just a shiny showpiece. It is presented in very good condition inside and out, but is in especially fine fettle mechanically. If you’re looking for a convertible sports car that’s as rewarding to drive as it is to look at, you need look no further than this Triumph TR6.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the vendor in 2005
  • Restored during the vendor’s ownership
  • Subject to some sympathetic upgrades that can be reversed if the next owner wishes
  • Current MOT until January 2024 (although exempt)
  • V5C present
  • Copy of the factory build record obtained from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust
  • Accompanied by a number of old MOT certificates
  • Numerous invoices for parts, restoration work and servicing
  • Different instruments were used while the originals were being refurbished so the vendor estimates around 4,000 miles were covered prior to the original being refitted
  • Dry stored when not in use and driven very sparingly
  • The invoices total in excess of £15,000 for parts during the restoration

The Interior

  • Exhibits some gentle wear from light use over the past few years
  • The reupholstered seats look really good finished in leather and they have weathered in nicely
  • Interior trim cards and cappings replaced.
  • No excessive wear or any damage to be seen
  • The veneer on the dashboard presents very well
  • All of the instruments are present and legible
  • Original speedometer and rev counter restored and recalibrated in 2016
  • Attractive and very tactile Moto-Lita steering wheel
  • The carpeting is in good shape and is protected by ‘Triumph’ embroidered overmats
  • This is a very smart interior that is comfortable to be in and feels well put together

The Exterior

  • Styling by Karmann, making it look quite different to previous Michelotti designed Triumphs
  • Body on frame construction
  • The vendor informs us that the body was removed from the chassis during the restoration
  • Repairs to the chassis were carried out where necessary and the differential mounts were strengthened
  • A number of new panels were used to restore the bodywork which was taken back to bare metal before being resprayed
  • Undersealed to protect the car from corrosion
  • Now features a Mohair hood complete with cover which operates smoothly and is in great condition
  • Pirelli 6000 195/65 RIS tyres (incuding spare) which reportedly display only moderate wear and the spare does not look to have ever been used
  • The paintwork presents very well overall with a few small scratches and chips from use
  • The bodywork look to be very straight and the panels fit well
  • We’re informed that the underside was commended by the last MOT tester for being so clean and in such good condition
  • The chassis appears in really good shape and we couldn’t see any corrosion

The Mechanics

  • The vendor points out that all the modifications can be easily reversed if the next owner wishes
  • 2.5-litre straight-six with a manual gearbox and overdrive
  • The TR6 pulls strongly in all gears and, although overdrive can be a little slow to engage when cold, it works well when warm
  • The vendor has not noted any faults when driving the car
  • A new battery was fitted before the last MOT in January 2023
  • The advisories from the current MOT test will be rectified before sale
  • The rolling chassis was rebuilt with poly bushes, lower stiffened springs and adjustable Spax shock absorbers
  • Now fitted with cross drilled front discs, four-pot callipers and Kevlar brake pads
  • Upgraded Alfin drum brakes at the back and the brake cylinders were replaced
  • The engine was rebored and rebuilt to run on unleaded petrol
  • The crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, flywheel and clutch cover were balanced
  • Ported and polished head with roller rockers fitted
  • New pistons, Kent fast road camshaft with vernier cam gear and lightened cam followers
  • Stainless steel extractor manifold and exhaust system
  • K&N air filters
  • Kenlowe electric fan to provide extra cooling along with an aluminium radiator
  • Updated canister-style oil filter
  • The mechanicals were set up by Enginuity based in Acton back in 2008, recording 180 bhp on their rolling road
  • The vendor reports that it has always been really reliable

Summary

We love how so much time and effort has gone into making this TR6 a great driver’s example. If you really like using your cars, this would be a great example to consider.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
