1973 Volkswagen T2

  • Genuine UK-supplied RHD vehicle with just 2 owners from new
  • Bare metal restoration in 2016
  • Original engine has been recently overhauled
  • Fresh MOT

The Appeal

This is an extraordinarily rare opportunity to find a genuine UK-supplied Late Bay Transporter with just 2 owners from new and under 100k miles on the original air-cooled engine.

The remarkable and verified provenance is only part of the story. Other reasons for potential buyers to consider bidding include the high-quality bare-metal restoration/respray completed in 2016 and the fully retrimmed interior. Over £30,000 was spent on the restoration.

Having recently received an engine-out mechanical overhaul, this camper is 100% ready to be enjoyed by the lucky new owner.

The History and Paperwork

  • Genuine UK-supplied vehicle with just 2 owners from new and 99,500 original miles
  • Impressive history file that includes original purchase invoice dated March 1973
  • Bare metal exterior restoration and respray completed in 2016
  • Interior totally retrimmed in 2019
  • Recent engine-out mechanical refresh
  • Maintained by VW dealers and specialists
  • Original owner’s manuals and pouch are still with the vehicle
  • V5C log book in owner’s name present
  • Outdoor winter cover and variety of camping accessories included in the sale

Having purchased the vehicle from its original owners, after 10 years of happy memories the current owner has reluctantly decided to part ways with this fabulous camper to focus his attention on another classic car project.

The Interior

  • Retrimmed in beautiful beige vinyl in 2019, the interior presents extremely well with no specific damage or blemishes to note
  • Carpets, dashboard, door cards and headlining are all in excellent condition
  • Auxiliary electrics hooked up to leisure battery
  • Electric hookup with double socket and camping fridge
  • Pop-up top provides an additional double sleeping area
  • All switchgear, dials and gauges are said to be in full working order apart from the clock (from a Karman Ghia)
  • Steel spare wheel with unused tyre

Having been fully retrimmed in 2019, the vendor grades the vehicle as a 9.5 out of 10 for interior condition. All upholstered surfaces have had the material replaced, while hard surfaces such as the dashboard, steering wheel and switchgear have stood up remarkably well to the test of time, and are indicative of a vehicle that has been well cared for throughout its lifetime.  The interior cupboards are a one-off custom build rendering the interior extremely practical and useable.

The Exterior

  • Bodywork in extremely good condition having been professionally resprayed by air-cooled VW specialists Beetlelink in 2016
  • Two-tone VW Velvet Green/White paintwork is in excellent shape with only a few small (now touched-in) stone chips the only minor blemishes to note
  • All brightwork is near-perfect with each item having either been re-chromed or replaced
  • Trim pieces, glass and lights are as good as the rest of the vehicle
  • Wheels are described as good with plenty of tread remaining on the tyres
  • During the restoration process, all necessary welding was completed to ensure the underside remains in good condition with no visible signs of damage or corrosion
  • Tow Bar fitted but yet to be wired in

Truly stunning on the outside, this gorgeous two-tone camper regularly receives praise from enthusiasts for its exceptional appearance. The restoration process was clearly carried out thoroughly with all body and paint work being completed to an incredibly high standard.

The Mechanics

  • Original 1600cc engine is in fine fettle with no leaks, smoke or other faults to be aware of
  • Always maintained by main dealers and VW specialists
  • Recent overhaul included an engine-out service, degrease and a new starter motor
  • Electronic ignition and a high-powered coil have been fitted to smooth out the engine’s characterful performance
  • Transmission is smooth and enjoyable to use
  • Suspension, steering and brakes are said to be in good working order
  • Recent engine work also included some welding inside the engine bay, which is now extraordinarily clean and tidy in keeping with the rest of the vehicle

This camper is said to be a joy to drive thanks to a recent mechanical overhaul, which was completed by classic VW specialists R3 Garage Services in Chessington. The upgraded electronics have given the original engine a new lease of life while retaining the charming character of an air-cooled VW.

An exceptional example of a Late Bay Transporter camper that has been sympathetically restored to an extremely high standard while retaining its mechanical originality.

The safest way to buy a classic car online

Car & Classic's secure payment system protects buyers and sellers. At the end of the auction, the winning bidder transfers payment into a third-party escrow account. Once the transfer of the vehicle is complete, both parties confirm they are happy with the sale and the money is released to the seller.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
