The Appeal
The Triumph Stag was Britain’s answer to the Mercedes R107 SL, an upmarket, V8-equipped soft top GT that could also take Britain’s export fight to the Americans.
Quality issues hobbled what, on paper, was a superb car: stylish, a proper four seater with a decent boot and powered by a brand new 3litre V8. Those problems kiboshed sales, but thankfully created an army of specialists able to fix and sort them for more modern buyers. As the enthusiastic owners will attest, a well maintained Stag is as reliable as any classic and likely considerably more engaging and rewarding than most.
The Stag was continuously improved throughout its life, later cars receiving lightly updated aesthetics and engineering improvements.
This 1974 is a ‘fourth sanction’ car, unofficially known as a ‘Mk2’ and equipped with the desirable automatic gearbox that leans into the cruising style of these aurally magnificent cars. With evidence of considerable ongoing expenditure and presented in the popular Magenta colour, it looks like a very good example of a very British and very rewarding convertible.

Standard interior except for addition of a later face-off style stereo
Veneers present well across the dashboard
Centre console around the gear selector showing light cracking but not unsightly
Switchgear looks good with clear, white decals and only gently aged
Electric window switches, as is common on these cars, have faded
Later ‘point up’ style dials with clear faces and decals and bright chrome surrounds
Factory black carpeting throughout in good condition
Carpets retain the ‘Triumph’ embossed black plastic inserts in both wells
Boot area is similarly presentable with good carpet retaining deep black colour
Wood rimmed three spoke steering wheel with Stag centre boss

Largely standard exterior but converted to wire wheels with centre hubs and chrome spinners
Clean, straight bodywork with consistent panel gaps

Undamaged sound deadening under bonnet
Strut tops continue the theme being showing no deterioration

Otherwise the bumpers and other chromework are excellent and shine brightly
Black fabric roof in good condition with clear rear window
Small area of damage visible below rear window

Unfortunately we were unable to check the underside of this car
The indication from the floors and bodywork is that it should be in similar condition
The Mechanics
Fitted with a replacement, reconditioned 3litre engine with unleaded head
Work undertaken by a Stag specialist but unfortunately we do not know the date
3spd automatic gearbox
Thick history file indicating careful, attentive ownership
Unfortunately at the time of writing we do not know when the car was last serviced
Summary
It is a truth Stag owners know but perhaps others haven’t quite fully acknowledged: it is a really, really good car. Comfortable, characterful and rewarding in a way its German rivals never quite achieve, even the newest ones are over 45 years old.
Careful maintenance and sympathetic use are key to Stag ownership and this car clearly demonstrates those qualities. Looking resplendent in Magenta it presents a tantalising opportunity for the lucky buyer.

About Max Bids
The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.
Anti-sniping
Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.
Auto-bidding increments
If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Automatically outbid immediately
When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.
Matching max bids
When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
What are pre-bids?
A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.
Problem with your bid
Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
