The Appeal

Launched in 1972, Honda’s XL 250 was the first modern four-stroke enduro ’bike and the first mass-produced four-valve motorcycle.
The early 1970s was a period in the development of off-road and dual-purpose motorcycles that is still unmatched, in terms of diversity and excellence of execution.

The XL250 was an ‘enduro’ or dual-sport bike, meaning that while it looked like a dirt bike, and shared many characteristics with a dirt bike, it was street-legal and intended for both on- and off-road use. It laid the groundwork for the subsequent wave of big, modern four-stroke enduros, and its enduro credentials were sealed when, shortly after coming onto the market, a straight-out-of-the-box XL250 won the much-vaunted Virginia City Grand Prix, a “half-scramble, half-motocross” event over ten laps of a rugged 16-mile course.

Regarded as a classic bike, the model is still sought-after by both collectors and enthusiasts, and this example is in outstandingly original condition, with only a few minor issues to address.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 1975
  • Part of a big collection
  • Little used in last ten years
  • MoT- and tax-exempt

This bike is being sold by the vendor on behalf of a collector, who is reducing the size of his stable of rare and unusual bikes. Sadly, there is very little paperwork at all for the bike, other than a V5C document in the name of a previous owner from 1992, which records three owners prior to that date, and a covering letter from that owner to the current custodian.

The owner believes that the bike was in the USA for some time, but this is difficult to verify without supporting paperwork, and a DVLA online search reveals that the bike was last taxed in 1977! As an historic bike, it is of course now MoT and tax-exempt but its registration status will need to be resolved by a new owner.

The Condition

  • Mostly original
  • In storage for last ten years
  • Few signs of age

Having been stored as part of a collection for the best part of ten years, and with only 8675 miles showing on the odometer, the bike is in remarkably original condition. There’s a significant dent on the fuel tank, and some minor incidences of rust (on the headlamp nacelle, and the chrome indicator stalks) but otherwise there is very little to find fault with and few signs of its forty-seven year lifespan.

The Mechanics

  • 248cc four-stroke engine
  • 5-speed transmission
  • Sympathetically recommissioned by vendor
  • New battery
  • Carburettor cleaned and recommissioned
  • Starts and runs

The vendor has sympathetically recommissioned the bike on behalf of the owner, in preparation for sale, installing a new battery and cleaning the carburettor. The bike starts and runs well, but the vendor reports that there are a few minor electrical issues to address: the horn doesn’t work and the indicators come on but don’t flash – this is most probably an issue with the relays.

The bike is completely mechanically operated; there are no hydraulics on the bike.

The XL250 Motosport was an instant world-wide success. Although not a fast bike, even in its day, it had a winning combination of reliable power, reasonable suspension and smooth, comfortable on-road performance. It soon took on cult status, as the ultimate dual-purpose bike for serious trail riders who would ride their bikes to and from work, or take long road-trips.

Consequently, its classic status is assured and you’ll do well to find as well-preserved an example as this one. With only a couple of paperwork and electrical issues to sort out, this is a bike that should appeal to any classic bike enthusiast.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
