1978 Triumph Spitfire 1500

• Recent repaint in Triumph Yellow
• Manual Gearbox with Overdrive
• Recent replacement convertible top
• Replacement seat covers

The Triumph Spitfire has long flown the flag for the plucky British sports car, successfully combining Italian styling with crisp handling, a fruity engine and a decent sized boot.

It's attractive good looks and all round practicality, coupled with a decent spares support and a loyal following has meant the Spitfire has remained a popular choice, especially for those looking for their first classic car.

And nothing says British summer more than a Triumph Spitfire 1500 in bright yellow. It just entices you into sampling some top down classic car motoring.

This 1978 Triumph Spitfire 1500 retains a lot of its original interior, including carpets, dashboard, steering wheel and passenger sun visor.

The seat covers were replaced by a previous owner and present well with minimal signs of use. The door cards were also replaced at some point. Numerous interior items were either missing or broken when the current owner acquired the car. He fitted some replacement items such as new inner chrome door
handles, centre console and new door rubbers.

The wooden dashboard facia is in unrestored condition and shows some minor marks as you would expect for a vehicle of this age. There is a small crack on the dash top which is shown in the photos.

The seller states that all the gauges work, as does the heater.

Some of the interior fittings are likely the original ones fitted to the car when it left the factory in 1978, such as the passenger sun visor and map reading light and could do with a detail to refresh their condition.

When the current owner acquired the Spitfire last year it was incomplete and was missing numerous parts.

It had a rusty bonnet and lacked door mirrors, numerous pieces of trim and badges. The front grill was also missing. He set about giving the car a refresh, sourcing numerous parts for the car and treated it to a replacement used bonnet.

Yellow is a colour that really suits the Spitfire's Italian styling and gives it a bright and fresh look. The paint presents well over all with some marks present. The bonnet has some evidence of micro blistering. There is also evidence of past repairs to the bonnet which is visible on the inside front nose area.

A previous owner fitted a new hood to the Spitfire and it is in good condition with no rips or tears. A hardtop painted in yellow to match the Spitfire also comes with the car.

The Spitfires wheels were treated to a repaint and some new centre caps by the current owner.

The car has 3 Firestone tyres fitted (two to the rear and one left front) which appear to have good thread. The front right tyre is a Goodyear Grand Prix which doesn’t match the other tyres. A spare tyre, again of a different make, is included in the boot. No jack or tool kit comes with the car.

The front chrome bumper is in decent shape and would benefit from a good polish. There are two small rust holes evident in the rear bumper.

The Spitfire starts well and the seller states that it runs and drives good. The brakes are also said to be good and he says they stop the car well. He adds that the Overdrive works on the gearbox.

The twin pipe rear exhaust was likely added by the previous owner and has that fruity note that is a characteristic of the Triumph Spitfire.

The seller acquired numerous replacements gaskets, seals and brackets for the engine bay, which are documented in the history file. He has not serviced the car since he acquired it last year. He added that a lot of the cars mechanical items were worked on by the previous owner but he has no paperwork to show what was done.

The cars last MOT test noted some oil leaks from the engine which are evident in the underside engine bay photos.

The Spitfires current mileage is 91,463 which was also its stated mileage during an old MOT test on 29th April 2014. This suggests that the odometer stopped working at some point.

With Summer finally here we can see the appeal of a Yellow Spitfire, especially blasting along some country lanes with the roof down.

This example benefits from having numerous items replaced, plus a recent respray. It is now looking for the new owner to take it to the next level and make it their own.

The car comes with some Triumph Spitfire booklets, a Spitfire parts catalogue plus numerous invoices for the new and replacement parts sourced by the current owner and one set of keys.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 5-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
