1979 Land Rover Lightweight

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • Oozing with character and patina, the condition of this Land Rover tells stories of a full life
  • Delightfully original and simplistic
  • Extremely solid example ready to be enjoyed as it is or as a light restoration project

The Appeal

With modern four wheel drive vehicles now being laden with technology to keep the vehicle in contact with the ground, this Lightweight is totally back to basics, with absolutely no electronic assists, leaving the driving up to the driver!

Designed specifically for the MoD, this distinctive military vehicle was designed to be easily repairable, simple to use and with a go-anywhere attitude. With a simple chassis, engine and easily removable, lightweight aluminium panels meant that keeping these vehicles running was possible by the home mechanic, now having a huge following in 4X4 communities and military aficionados.

This cracking example is overflowing with personality, the full vehicle having evidence of maintenance of the years which paints a picture of its 44 year long life. Still retaining the original 2.3 Litre petrol engine and virtually all the original features presents us with a real joy to observe, a vehicle that will go anywhere, no questions asked.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5C paperwork

The Interior

  • Non original paintwork throughout in army green that has a rustic finish, evidently applied some time ago and has accrued some significant patina and wear
  • 3 bench seats covered in varying shades of dark green fabric all have a wonderful worn look befitting of the whole interior, some areas in need of repair to ensure their integrity but a solid base for improvement
  • With the most simplistic ‘dashboard’ you will see, having basic heating and ventilation controls, all working parts visible and easy to maintain and everything well within reach to all occupants.
  • The heating system has two windscreen directed blowers for minimising misting and all appears in good fettle, easily accessible and simple to repair if needed
  • The two glass dials are in good condition with some light detritus on the glass but giving a sufficient view of the speedometer, fuel level and oil and water temperatures
  • The rear benches that provide space for 6 passengers are in very good condition all things considered, no frills, no carpets or seat belts but the seats do fold away for extra storage or access
  • All the sliding windows, manual operated ventilation and driving aids all appear in good working order with nothing seemingly broken or damaged what we could see

The Exterior

  • The epitome of utilitarian finishes with hand applied camouflage style paintwork and tan canvas top
  • The canvas top, despite some discolouration is otherwise in great order with some light wear and some marks, but no rips impeding the integrity or fitment
  • All the exterior flights are in fine order with no evident cracks or fogging from moisture ingress
  • All the panels are in good solid condition benefiting from being aluminium and therefore not corroding like steel. Many of the panels have minor dents, marks and varying paint finishes but there's no reason the body does not have another 44 years left in it
  •  Functional tailgate allowing access to the rear or acting a bench
  • Bonnet mounted spare wheel could be also mounted on the rear tailgate
  • All the exterior fixtures are 100% functional, no bells or whistles but designed purely for ease of use and access with longevity in mind

The Mechanics

  • Standard 2.3 litre in-line 4 cylinder petrol engine along with a Zenith carburettor producing 70bhp
  • The engine bay is presented similarly to the exterior of the vehicle with lots of character and a utilitarian appearance. Everything is seemingly in good order though there is evidence of a coolant leak from the high pressure cap on the radiator
  • This was the first model to be fitted with servo a assisted braking system
  • All 5 tyres are fitted with very recent 6.00 wide tyres as fitted from new
  • A basic ladder chassis is fitted to this vehicle, seemingly is decent condition with the
  • usual surface corrosion one would expect and evidence on a repair on the drivers rear above the axel
  • All the suspension components appear in good order with similar light corrosion as the chassis. The leaf springs, shackles and ‘U’ bolts appear undamaged and the track and drag links look to be in nice condition
  • The front and rear differentials have a fairly dry exterior and are in nice solid condition

Summary

Clearly untouched for some time, this Series lll is in good mechanical order and boasts many original features that have gone untouched for some time.
With huge amounts of character and no frills this is the ideal off road toy without the worries of scratching the paint and with the go anywhere and do anything attitude, it will be huge amounts of fun too.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
