1980 Porsche 924 Turbo Mk1

Highlights

  • Rare 924 Turbo
  • Recently resprayed
  • Previous engine rebuild
  • Well maintained example
  • Drives brilliantly

The Appeal

The 924 is a rather interesting vehicle from Porsche’s lineup, being the very first production road-going car to use a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. It was also the first to use water cooling, a rather significant turning point for Porsche and perhaps inspiring the modern wave of water-cooled models.

Although the base model 924 was rather harshly criticised, the Turbo models are an entirely different animal and received great praise and motorsport success. In addition to being one of the most sought-after from the 924 lineups, these Turbo variants are incredibly rare in the UK, with perhaps less than 100 on the roads today.

As a result, opportunities to secure stunning, well-maintained examples such as this are rather rare and should be considered by enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The History and Paperwork

  • Stamped Porsche service booklet
  • Serviced at AFN Porsche up to 32,000 miles
  • Current advisory free MOT
  • Well maintained and cared for
  • Historical vehicle, now tax and MOT exempt

Prior to being acquired by the current owner 2 years ago, this 924 had laid dormant for quite some time and was in need of thorough recommissioning. As an avid Porsche enthusiast, the current keeper happily rose to the challenge and ensured the vehicle received everything it needed to return to the road. Details of the recommissioning can be found within the included paperwork, which details items like a new battery, header tank, starter motor, ignition leads, and more.

In addition to receiving a great deal of work courtesy of the current keeper, this Porsche has also undergone a full engine rebuild in 1993 by a renowned specialist. Since the rebuild, the car has only covered a mere 23,000 miles and still performs brilliantly.

In addition to the aforementioned invoices, the paperwork also includes the original Porsche service booklet, previous MOT certificates, a dyno printout, and the V5C document ready for the lucky new owner.

The Interior

  • Original interior
  • Excellent condition
  • Removable Targa roof
  • JVC head unit

This 924 shows off a seemingly mostly original interior, that appears to have been preserved rather well over the years, only now showing the expected signs of age. As seems to be the case with many older 924s, this example does show cracks to the dashboard, as pictured. There are also signs of use to be found with the steering wheel, and a minor amount of discolouration to carpeting, both of which can likely be alleviated with a dash of TLC.

The seats, on the other hand, seem to show far fewer signs of wear and age than you would first expect with a car of this age. While the front seats do of course show signs of wear in keeping with the age and mileage, the rear seats appear to have hardly been set in and look excellent for their age.

Although the JVC head unit doesn’t currently work, all other electrical components and instruments are believed to be in full working order, also showing minimal wear to controls and contact points.

The Exterior

  • Anari Silver paintwork
  • Recently resprayed
  • Removable Targa roof
  • Original refurbished alloy wheels

This 924 was treated with a full respray last year, and now shows off gorgeous Anari Silver paintwork. The Silver does of course take on a rather green tone and is certainly a colour that stands out from the crowds, especially on today’s roads. As the vehicle has covered rather few miles since being resprayed, there appears to only be minor imperfections around the vehicle, mostly to the front & rear as pictured. However, these are only noticeable upon very close inspection and hardly detract from the overall finish.

In addition to a fresh coat of paint, the car’s original Turbo spec wheels also received some love, in the form of a refurbishment. The wheels have been powder coated in graphite grey, and now look excellent, offering a great contrast against the Anari paintwork. The wheels are also wrapped in a welcome set of Pirelli Cinturato tyres, with a great amount of tread left to enjoy.

The Mechanics

  • Drives brilliantly
  • Rebuilt engine
  • Previously recommissioned
  • New battery
  • New header tank
  • New starter motor
  • New ignition leads
  • Rebuilt distributor
  • Recently serviced
  • Engine setup & rolling road printout
  • New Pirelli Cinturato tyres

This 924 is surely a standout example, displaying excellent mechanical health with over £10k worth of servicing and works. As listed above, the vehicle has certainly received a great deal of new and rebuilt parts, now performing without a single known mechanical issue.

The turbo 4-cylinder fires up first time, no doubt benefitting from a previous engine rebuild and a health check & setup from Blaze Motorsport in Kent. The vehicle was also tested on the rolling road, achieving a rather impressive 162bhp with the printout to support.

Pair this engine with the smooth 5-speed dog-leg gearbox, and you’re treated to a truly characterful and rewarding drive.

Summary

This gorgeous 924 Turbo shows off a freshly repainted exterior, refurbished alloys and a mostly original interior. Having received a tremendous amount of care, maintenance and servicing over the years, this Porsche performs exactly as intended, and is no doubt one of the more impressive examples available today.

If you’re looking for a characterful weekend toy, or a well-maintained example to add to your collection, this beautiful Anari Silver Mk1 924 Turbo certainly won't disappoint.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
