1987 Mercedes-Benz 200T (S124)

Highlights

 • Largely original example
 • Well-preserved interior
 • Thick history file
 • Huge load space

The Appeal

Later marketed as the E-class, the Mercedes-Benz W124 was produced between 1994 and 1997.

Much of the engineering and many of the features of the W124 were ground-breaking at the time and have since been adopted across the industry, and it was renowned for having the lowest drag coefficient (Cd) of any car at the time.

With a reputation for robustness and reliability, Autocar magazine once described the W124 as ’the best used car on the planet’

The estate model (designated S124) came in 5- and 7-seat versions; D 893 HYL is a 5-seater, with the advantage of a vast load bay and the improved rear-seat headroom over the 7-seater.

With good W124s increasingly hard to find, values have gone up in recent years and this example offers an affordable entry-point to W124 ownership.

The History and Paperwork

 • MoT valid until November 2022
 • Original owner’s manual, service book
 • Thick file of invoices, tax discs etc
The vendor recently bought the car from a family friend and an online search of the car’s MoT history reveals that the car has done only 6,000 miles since 2006, reflecting the vendor’s understanding that the previous owner looked after the car well but rarely drove it.

The car comes with a big file of paperwork that includes all the car’s previous tax discs, a wad of invoices dating right back to 1989, the original owner’s manual and service book, and a notebook in which a previous owner recorded every detail of work done to the car and every item of expenditure.

The Interior

 • Well-preserved and original interior
 • Comfortable and relaxed driving position
 • Clean and spacious load bay
Once he had acquired the car, the vendor removed seat covers that had clearly been in place for many years, and was delighted to find the seats are in extremely good condition.

The rear seats in particular look virtually unused. There’s a slight water-mark on the driver’s seat but otherwise the fabric is unmarked, with few signs of wear.

The driving position is comfortable and reflects the W124’s reputation as a refined and spacious cruiser. The electric sunroof isn’t working but otherwise all the switchgear seems to operate as it should. The Pioneer radio/CD player works and the case for the detachable front panel is included.

The rest of the interior, aside from a couple of cracks on top of the dashboard, is also in remarkably good condition for its age.

All four door panels are very good, the carpets are pretty clean, with little evidence of wear, and the wooden veneer on the dash and centre console has only a couple of minor cracks.

In the (very large!) load space, the carpets are very good and panels in the floor lift to reveal additional space. Behind a panel on the nearside is a spare wheel and tyre in very good condition, while on the other side an original first-aid kit looks unused, as does the warning triangle.

There’s a retractable cover for the load space and a retractable dog-grille to divide the load space from the rear seats.

An original tool-roll and two roof-bars complete the package.

The Exterior

 • Distinctive W124 profile
 • ‘Deep Blue’ paint
 • Sound wheels and tyres
The exterior of the car doesn’t quite live up to the standards set by the interior.

The Deep Blue paintwork is generally good, but there is rust bubbling through on both rear wings, although the vendor suggests that good-value replacements are readily available.

Elsewhere, there is a crack in the nearside headlamp but otherwise the lights, glass and brightwork are generally very good.

All four wheels look pretty good and the tyres have plenty of life in them. The bumpers and other trim have faded, as one would expect on a car of this age, but are otherwise sound.

The Mechanics

 • 2-litre petrol engine
 • 4-speed auto gearbox
 • Starts readily and drives well
The 200T was seen as very much the ‘entry level’ W124 but, with recent increases in fuel prices the 2-litre engine probably represents a more cost-effective introduction to W124 ownership than some of the bigger, thirstier alternatives.

D 893 HYL starts on first turn of the key, the engine note is good and the car pulls away readily. Gear changes from the auto ‘box are smooth and quiet.

Under the bonnet, the engine bay shows the inevitable signs of the car’s age but is generally sound. The battery looks like a recent replacement.

Underneath the car, there is no evidence of significant rust or leaks, and the exhaust looks to be in very good condition.

Summary

Regularly cited as one of Mercedes’ high-water marks, the W124 series is legendary for its bulletproof engineering, bank-vault construction and no-nonsense reliability.

The car’s looks have aged well and its ride quality and level of refinement were years ahead of its time.
D 893 HYL is a fundamentally sound and original example, with an interior that belies its age but with a few bodywork issues to be addressed.

The mileage is by no means excessive, considering the many miles clocked up by the thousands of these cars that served as taxis, and this one has plenty of life in it yet.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
