1987 Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI Gutmann Edition

** The seller informs us that the car can be taken to the UK for around 1600£ / 1800€ including customs paperwork**

  • Rare Gutmann conversion
  • Full track spec with roll cage, bucket seats and harnesses
  • Original parts included to restore to original specification
  • One of only 300 built

The Appeal

The 205 GTI is already a legendary hot hatch, but German tuning company Gutmann took the idea a step further in the late '80s/early '90s, creating about 300 conversions that added a wild wide-arch bodykit and a number of mechanical enhancement to increase power output.

This particular model has been converted for track use, so features a number of modifications. However, it also comes with all the original parts that have been removed, meaning any new buyer should have everything they need to restore it to factory specification, if so desired.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in July 1987 and delivered new in Germany
  • 2 owners from new, current one since 1997,  bought from German friend
  • Bosnian paperwork in seller's name
  • Garage stored
  • Part main dealer service history
  • Selling to free up storage space and lack of use

The Interior

  • Full 4-point roll cage
  • Fixed OMP bucket seats
  • Race harnesses
  • Original interior / trim also supplied

With a full roll cage, OMP bucket seats and harnesses, this 205 is a perfect track day toy. The owner has largely stripped the interior, but all of the original trim and interior fittings (other than the rear view mirror) are included with the sale. So the new owner should be able to restore the car to factory specification, should they so desire.

The original upholstery is the classic half leather/cloth black, silver and red upholstery, with matching red carpets and red/black door cards. Inside, the trim, carpets and door cards look to be in reasonably good condition as are the bucket seats and red roll cage/harnesses. Of course, it also comes with the original seats - the rear bench looks to be in good, unrestored condition, while the front seats are showing signs of wear and are split in a couple of places along the seams. From what we can see, they should be reasonably simple to restore though.

The owner has added alloy race pedals, matching gear knob and an isolation switch, while in the rear there is a mounted fire extinguisher.

The Exterior

  • Wide arch bodykit
  • 15” two-piece alloy wheels
  • Factory-fitted sunroof

While the interior has been heavily modified, the exterior is largely as it would have left Gutmann. Finished in shining black paintwork, the wide-arch kit gives the 205 an even more foursquare and muscular stance. A repaint in the original black was performed a few years ago but orange peel is evident throughout and would benefit from a professional polish.

Meanwhile, the body panels and bodykit itself appears to be in fine condition, straight and true, with no elements missing. Modifications that have been made include the addition of quick-release bonnet pins and extra latches on the rear hatch.

The alloys are two-piece items, with black-painted centres and polished lips. They are in need of a light refurb as they are starting to show some lacquer peel. It’s worth noting that the original Speedline alloys also come with the vehicle, pictures are at the end of the gallery. This car also features a factory-fitted sunroof and factory-fitted front fog lights.

Underneath, the car looks in very good condition, with no evidence we could see of damage or corrosion.

The Mechanics

  • 1.9 130hp four-cylinder 16v
  • Bartoli stainless steel exhaust system
  • New gearbox

While Gutmann also did extensive work on the engines, this particular car retains its stock 1.9l unit. The engine is said to run fine and never needed any major work throughout the years.

The car has had a new gearbox fitted, and benefits from a Bartoli stainless exhaust system, helping the engine breathe better and also allowing the driver to better hear that fantastic engine note.

We’re informed by the owner that the car drives very well and is extremely quick. They report that there are no mechanical issues they are aware of.

This is a fantastic opportunity to acquire one of the rarest hatchbacks on the market. Only about 300 Gutmann conversions were built, and they rarely appear on the market. While this one has been modified for track day use, as it comes with the original interior and trim, it could easily be restored to original specification.

Alternatively, as a track car, it’s a hugely capable and interesting vehicle – you’re certainly not going to see many more of them at your local track day! Presented in good condition, with lots of potential, we think this smart special edition 205 GTI is a surefire winner…

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
