1988 Land Rover 90 County

Highlights

  • Fitted with Turner Engineering remanufactured engine
  • Owned by the vendor since 1990
  • Just 62,539 miles from new

The Appeal

The rugged simplicity of the Land Rover has earned the brand something of a cult following over the years and original cars with good provenance are highly sought after. In current ownership since it was just 2 years old, this Land Rover 90 County was acquired from the original dealer Testers Ltd and it has lived in Edenbridge, Kent for the entirety of its life.
Largely original and unrestored, this is an honest and eminently presentable car that has clearly been looked after. It would be an excellent candidate for a rolling restoration or simply to preserve in its current state. If you’re on the lookout for a smart, original Land Rover, this 90 is not one to be missed.

The History and Paperwork

  • Originally supplied and for many years serviced by Testers Land Rover of Edenbridge
  • Original sales invoice present and dated 04/01/1988
  • The car was once again owned by Testers Ltd in June, 1990
  • Acquired by the present owner on 15th August 1990 and this invoice is present as well
  • Garage stored for most of its life
  • Used occasionally for family picnics and towing
  • Serviced for some years by Testers and then by independent specialists
  • The car received a Turner Engineering remanufactured engine in 2000
  • It has therefore covered fewer than 21,000 miles with its current engine fitted
  • Collection of original dealer material and sales invoices
  • A number of the vehicle’s old tax discs remain in the paperwork file
  • Original documentation for the Brownchurch roof rack
  • Paperwork provided by Turner Engineering
  • A number of invoices for work and servicing
  • V5C present
  • MOT valid until November 2023

The Interior

  • County upholstery including station wagon individual folding rear seats
  • Throughout, the seat fabric is in very good condition when you consider the car’s age
  • Brown carpeting present throughout with the exception of the driver’s footwell
  • Due to the lack of carpet, there is some wear to the aluminium floor panel and a little corrosion evident in the driver’s footwell
  • The dashboard looks to be in great shape and without sun damage
  • There is some wear to the controls as you would expect although nothing excessive
  • The instrumentation all presents well and we understand that everything works as it should

The Exterior

  • Original paintwork, bulkhead and chassis
  • The paint is very presentable with just a little fading, flaking and scorpion here and there
  • Straight bodywork - especially considering it is a utility vehicle with soft alloy panels
  • County rear windows and alpine roof lights
  • Brownchurch roof rack and rear awning fitted
  • There is some electrolytic corrosion in the lower portion of the doors as is not unusual
  • The protective bull bar would benefit from refurbishment
  • Underneath, the original chassis would look to be in very good order
  • The bulkhead displays some corrosion in places, although it does not appear excessive
  • The offside rear tub capping has rusted quite heavily in one spot
  • It sits upon period-correct County wheels
  • The vendor informs us that there is plenty of tread remaining on the tyres
  • The rear door has been modified so that it can be lifted off easily

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre Turbo Diesel
  • Replacement Turner Engineering remanufactured engine fitted in 2000 costing £2,320.63
  • The vendor informs us that a new radiator was fitted in recent years
  • Starts, runs and drives really well
  • Changes gear smoothly and stops in a straight line
  • No untoward noises or idiosyncrasies to report

Summary

This is a great example of the eminently desirable short-wheelbase Land Rover. In its County Specification, this is a really versatile vehicle ideally suited to carrying passengers through challenging terrain. If you fancy a rolling restoration project or simply a good, honest example of the iconic Land Rover, this 90 would be a great choice.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
