1988 Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI

Highlights

 • Sought after classic hot hatch
 • Presented in amazing condition
 • A wonderful car to drive

The Appeal

Peugeot hit on an instant classic when they released the 205 GTI in 1984, since its launch it has been heralded as the best hot hatch, EVER. With the values of the 205 GTI on an upward trend over the past few years, this is not only a great car to drive but it is a sensible car to purchase too.

First launched with a peppy 1.6litre engine producing just over 100hp it was quickly upgraded with larger valves bringing the horsepower up to 115hp. This example is fitted with the latter and is now presented in great condition showing little signs of its age, the next owner will be getting one excellent example.

This car offers you the chance to ‘meet your hero’, many of you would have grown up with a poster of a 205 on your bedroom wall. Or you may have grown up reading the reviews of such cars in auto car magazine. Either way, this will be one of those cars that you will always love. It'll be an excellent addition to your garage.

The History and Paperwork

 • Built during possibly the best time for hot hatches this 1.6l 205GTI has gone on to live a very happy life
 • History folder includes old MOTs, invoices and original service book
 • There is a slight gap in its paperwork between 2000-2010, but this is mainly due to the car being in storage for the decade
 • Has just received an oil and filter service and a fresh MOT with no advisories
 • Two new front tyres just fitted
 • V5 present

The Interior

 • Stunning red carpet in great condition
 • There are no splits or tears to any fabric seats
 • Rare to find sunroof option – this works as it should
Once you step into the interior of this retro hot hatch you are transported back to the 80s with huge buttons and an in-your-face red carpet fitted it is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy your drive.

All four of the seats are in great condition, finished in a grey fabric with a red pattern they are great to sit in and explore the best roads the world has to offer. To match the seats the dashboard is finished in a corresponding grey plastic, adorned with huge heater controls and a period Philips tape deck it is like a time capsule full of 80s tech.

It has to be said that the bright red carpet that is fitted within this Peugeot is both ‘of the time’ and in great condition. It is clear to see that this car has been looked after properly receiving all the love and attention it could ever need.

The smaller and sometimes overlooked elements of the interior such as the headlining and even the door cards are also presented in excellent condition showing almost no signs of its age whatsoever. Whoever gets to own this car next and sit within the interior will be a very happy person, with such an engaging experience thanks to the three pedals and manual gearbox it truly is a proper driver’s car.

The Exterior

 • All four ‘pepper pot’ wheels are undamaged
 • Every piece of the exterior trim is present and correct
 • Icon design that is instantly recognisable
The 205 shape is instantly recognisable from any angle, the slated boot lid and boxy front end make for beautifully simple lines, and the red flashes around the doors and front lip help make the 205 GTI a real looker.

This car is finished in a lovely, brilliant silver so from any angle it looks excellent. To help compliment the silver paint and silver pepper pot style wheels there is a black and red plastic trim that runs all the way around the car and is one of the most recognisable features on the exterior of a GTI.

Nowadays it can be hard to find a great example of a 205 GTI, older French cars can suffer badly with rust ultimately calling an end to many an example, this car is presented with no real visible paint bubbling, there is a small patch just in front of the rear wheel on the passenger’s side, but nothing that should worry a prospective buyer.

Many of you would have grown up reading about these cars and wishing that one day you could have one. With this example being presented in such great condition it is the car to have for long summer drives.

The Mechanics

 • Fitted with the 115bhp 1.6 litre engine
 • 5-speed manual box
 • Incredibly fun car to drive – unlike any modern hot hatch
The 205 was a great car even in its most basic form, so when Peugeot wanted to create a hot hatch the run of the mill 205 was a perfect candidate. Fitted with a peppy little 1.6l producing just over 100hp it was and still is a thrill to drive. To further cement this car as a hot hatch legend, a great 5-speed manual gearbox was fitted so the driver can be at one with their machine.

This example is in great mechanical condition and raring to go on your next big adventure, simply turn the key and you are away. On the day that the photographs were taken she was required to start and maneuvered into position on several occasions, she performed this task easily with no worrying noises coming from the engine or gearbox.

The next owner of this car will have one excellent driver’s car that is like no other modern hot hatch. Along with the Golf GTI, the 205 GTI is one of the revolutionary godfathers within a much-loved genre of cars.

Summary

If you think of a hot hatch from the 1980s then the 205 GTI should sit at the top of your list, with excellent driving characteristics and a great-looking body it is one of those cars that will live on forever. With the prices of 205 GTIs on the up, this may be one of your last chances to get one before they become unattainable.

With this example being presented in such great all-around condition then this will be the perfect addition to your collection.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
