Following the success of the Mk1 GTI, it was in 1983 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, when VW launched the (Typ 19E) Mk2 Golf. Designed in-house by VW’s design director, it was influenced by the Mk1 design, but was slightly larger and also much more refined. The size of the car piled on 120kg over the previous model, but with a more shapely body, it meant the performance and economy were better than the equivalent engined MK1.
The car was launched in the UK in 1984, with the GTI model available straight away. The 1800 cc engine was fueled by the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system, producing 112 bhp. The specification of the GTI remained the same up until 1986, when the 16 valve engine was released. 1987 saw the first major performance update to the 8 valve since the release, which is the model we have here. The improvements started with the introduction of the fully-electronic Digifant system, offering better economy and reliability. There was also an update to the body, which was the removal of the quarter light windows and moving the mirrors further forward, giving a more modern look to the Mk2 Golf GTI.
The seller of this 1988 MK 2 Golf GTI, purchased the car two years ago. He came across it at a customer’s house, where it was stored in a barn and had been for the past 5 years, and before that it was used for around 1,000 miles after 4 years in storage. The golf has been a well looked after car with a full service history up until when it was stored. The previous keeper was going to do some light restoration on the golf, which he had started by taking the wheel arches off, but then never got any further with the car, and it just became an abandoned project. A deal was struck and the seller became the proud owner of the Golf GTI. Once in the seller's possession, he proceeded to make the car mechanically sound. The full recommissioning of the engine ensured it was running as it should be. The suspension was all replaced, together with any other items that needed replacing. The interior was already in good condition, so that didn’t need touching; there were just a few areas on the bodywork that needed tidying up.
The golf went into the paint shop at the beginning of this year to have a few bits tidied up on the paintwork, but it was decided that as it was such a nice car, it just didn’t seem right to paint part of it, and that a full respray would be more beneficial in getting the Golf back to the original condition.
With the project complete, the seller enjoyed the golf in the summer, but has now decided to part with it so he can complete another project which is on the go.
Even though the Golf has been stored for the past 5 years, and 4 years prior to that, covering approximately 1,000 miles between the two bouts of storage, it has managed to accumulate an impressive 23 service stamps in the book.
Any previous receipts have unfortunately been lost, leaving the golf with just the original handbook, service book and wallet.
There is a receipt for the new suspension, and the MOT certificate which was carried out on 21st July 2021, where it passed with no advisories.
Inside the GTI it’s all very clean and well presented, the interior is all original. There is some slight wear to the driver's seat as you would expect on a car of this age, but it has not worn through, which is very unusual for the golf as the bolsters normally wear through. The driver's seat tilt cable unfortunately broke only yesterday. Into the rear, and the seat hasn’t had much use in its life which has kept it in excellent condition.
The dashboard is all in good condition with no cracks to be seen, and the instruments are all in working order. The odometer is showing a reading of 131,354, and the switchgear is all reported to be working as it should be. Just above the headlight switch there is an immobiliser fitted, and to the centre there is an aftermarket stereo fitted, which is in good working order. Moving down to the centre console, there is the original golf ball gear knob still in place and with no real wear.
The carpets are all in good order and there is a set of mats fitted, which has kept the originals nice and clean. Up above, the headlining on a golf of this age would normally have started to sag, but this one is excellent. The door cards do have some light stains, which may clean off with some upholstery cleaner. Into the boot area, and this again is excellent, with the original carpet in place and a spare wheel. The back panel still has the manufacturer’s sticker on from new, showing it’s never had any repairs to the rear end. You'll be pleased to know that the parcel shelf has escaped the 90s trend of cutting 6x9 speaker holes into it.
This lovely Mk2 Golf GTi has been repainted in the original colour of Paint code LY3D Tornado red. Starting at the front of the golf, the bumper is in excellent condition with no scuffs to be seen and the famous twin lamp grille is in good condition, with the GTi badge in place. The headlights do have some condensation inside them which may dry out. There are no chips to the lenses. The lower spoiler has some small scuffs to the bottom edge but nothing too excessive.
Around to the sides of the GTi, the car is in fantastic condition with no dinks or dents to point out. The door shuts are uniform around all of the edges, this is the same on both sides. The window rubbers on the GTi are all the originals and there is no sign of perishing or shrinking. The side mouldings and wheel arches are also the originals. There are a couple of tiny marks on the wheel arches, but you do have to look for these. The roof gutter trims have been removed and replaced very carefully, and have gone back on nicely without being bent. The sunroof has had a new seal fitted and opens and closes as it should. To finish off the exterior, there has been a replacement decal that runs down the swage line fitted, as per the original.
Around to the rear, and the hatch lines up as it should. This has also had a new decal applied. The light lenses are free from any cracks or splits. Just below is the Golf GTi badge, which is in good condition and the bumper is free from any scuffs or scrapes. The lower valance is nice and clean with two square tailpipes for the exhaust.
The wheels are Pirelli P Slots, which have been refurbished and shod with matching Continental tyres. Included with the sale is also a set of steel wheels.
The 1.8 litre 8 valve GTI starts up at the first flick of the key and sounds fantastic, with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. Since coming out of storage, the car has recently been given a full service including the replacement of the timing belt.
The gear change is reported to be as you would expect, with the GTI pulling well through the gears, which change nice and smoothly. There are no strange noises coming from the transmission. The GTI has benefited from new dampers and springs all round, giving back the amazing handling characteristics the GTI is famous for.
Looking at the underside of the Golf there looks to be no areas of concern. There is some surface rust to the suspension arms, and just a couple of odd patches to the floor. A good weekend in the garage would have all this treated and protected for many years to come.
A lovely, standard 1989 Mk2 Golf GTI, which has been dry stored on and off over a number of years, with the last time in storage being 5 years.
A few touch ups to the bodywork were needed which led to a full respray, and ultimately has given the GTI a new lease of life.
