THE APPEAL

Following the rapturous reception received by its Alfasud saloon car in the early 1970s, Alfa Romeo decided to introduce a slightly sportier version based on the saloon car’s chassis – an Italian alternative to the Ford Capri, VW Scirocco or Vauxhall Firenza, as it were.

The Giugiaro-styled Alfasud Sprint was revealed at the Turin Motor Show in November 1976 and came with quad headlamps and a lower roofline. It was assembled alongside the Alfasud in the Pomigliano d'Arco plant, located near Naples in southern Italy.

It was powered by a range of “Boxer” flat-four engines, each mated to a five-speed full-syncromesh gearbox.

This example is a very late one, from the final full year of production. It has the later matt black grille, wing mirrors, window surrounds and C-pillars with later lamp lenses.

It has been in the hands of just one owner since new in 1989 and has covered a mere 71,000km. It is completely and wholly original.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

• Owned since 1989
 • One-owner car
 • Always dry-stored
 • Only 71,000km

The vendor of the Alfa Romeo is a former Alfa specialist who looked after the brand’s cars 30 years ago and also raced them.

This car is one that he identifies as particularly special as it has had just one owner, who has kept it garaged and dry for all of its life. As a result, it has survived better than you’d ever expect of an Alfa of this vintage.

Registered in 1989, it’s a really late example of the Sprint, so has a lot of the later features and larger plastic grille. The 71,000km recorded is warranted by the previous owner as correct.

THE INTERIOR

• Standard cloth trim
 • No radio ever fitted
 • Perfect, crack-free dash
 • Excellent order

It’s the cabin that really stands out with this car – it looks and smells fresh and new, with barely any wear.

There are no cracks on the dashboard, it has never had a radio fitted, the seat fabrics are untarnished and aside from a crack in the gear lever gaiter, it’s in remarkably unspoilt condition.

The door carpets and headlining are also as good as new.

THE EXTERIOR

• Solid and rot-free
 • Excellent paintwork
 • Never welded
 • Revolution alloys

Never welded nor restored the Alfasud has been garaged all of its life and the paint still retains a good shine as a result, with no sun damage or deterioration.

Aside from a few very tiny marks, the bodywork is in great order as is most of the trim, the only very minor detractions being some very slight and shallow dents in the bonnet.

A smart set of period Revolution alloys complete the look.

THE MECHANICS

• 1,350cc Boxer four
 • Sounds amazing!
 • Drives and runs well
Under the bonnet, the Sud is totally original. Every clip, every fastener is exactly as it was when it left the factory.

There’s nothing to match the sound of a Boxer engine, either, with its distinctively uneven idle (a characteristic) and chirpy warble as it builds up revs. It’s a wonderful sound and one that many people associate with Alfa Romeo, seeing as the brand stuck with the layout well into the 1990s.

This one appears to be in fine fettle and is described by the owner as in great order. He says that the car drives well with no known faults.

SUMMARY

You’ll struggle to find an Alfasud Sprint as original and unspoilt as this one – it’s a wonderful car in fascinating, unrestored and extremely well-kept order.

There probably isn’t another as original or as genuine as this genuine one-owner example.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
