The Appeal

Once a very common sight on European roads, the Fiat Tipo (Type 160) has now all but disappeared. While in 1989 this was the European Car of The Year, apart from the odd slowly disintegrating smoker, you simply don’t see them about anymore – especially in this kind of condition.

Owned by one family from new, this charming survivor has clearly been cherished and beautifully maintained, and is presenting in exceptional condition with extremely low mileage. If you love to see everyday cars transcend to become something truly rare and special, then this will very much be your thing.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in March 1989
  • Early model as the Type 160 was launched in mid-1988
  • Single family ownership from new
  • Purchased and based in Italy
  • Italian registration documents
  • Indicated 61,567Km (38,356 miles)
  • Exceptionally original and in factory specification

The Interior

  • Original blue velour upholstery, in excellent condition, with little sign of wear and no damage we could see
  • Blue carpets with original ‘Fiat’ branded grey overmats, presented in fine condition
  • The headlining appears to be secure, unmarked and undamaged
  • Digital dash looks to be working as it should, with no pixelation and no warning lights
  • Electric front windows and traditional hand-winder rear windows
  • The boot is in very good order, trimmed with grey carpet and containing a full-size spare wheel
  • Underneath the boot carpet, the floor and wheel well look to be unmarked and in superb order, with no damage, corrosion or evidence of repair we could see
  • We’re told by the vendor that everything is original, and to our eyes it looks to be in near immaculate condition

The Exterior

  • Finished in its factory Grigio Metallizzato #620F paintwork
  • We’re told the paintwork is “90% original”, although the right-hand side doors and front wing have been recently resprayed due to scratches
  • Smart factory specification wheel covers over steel wheels
  • All of the glass elements and light lenses look well, with no cracking or misting we could identify
  • The external trim and badging all looks to be present and correct and in very good order
  • Looking at the sills and valances, the lower portions of the bodywork present very well, with no signs of damage or corrosion we could see.

The Mechanics

  • 1,372cc four-cylinder, carbureted petrol
  • Exceptionally clean and tidy engine bay, with no evidence of leaks we could see
  • Five-speed manual transmission
  • Low kerb weight of just 965Kg
  • New Varta battery fitted in March 2019
  • We’re assured by the vendor that the car runs and drives perfectly, needs absolutely nothing and has no mechanical faults they are aware of

It’s not often an average spec, everyday runaround is found in this kind of condition after 33 years of use. With such low mileage, and with bodywork that has clearly been well preserved in dry Italian climes, we think you’d struggle to find a nicer example of this wonderful everyday hero.

A fee of circa €200 is due from buyer for exportation costs or new registration.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
